Job Details
Position Summary
The Patient Transporter is responsible for safely transporting patients throughout the hospital using stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and specialized transport equipment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring timely patient movement while providing exceptional customer service and maintaining patient comfort, dignity, and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Transport patients to and from patient care units, procedure areas, clinical departments, and other designated hospital locations.
- Utilize stretchers, wheelchairs, beds, and specialized transport equipment safely and effectively.
- Assist nursing and clinical staff with transferring patients to and from transport vehicles.
- Deliver and maintain equipment necessary to support patient transport operations.
- Assist with the care, cleaning, and routine maintenance of departmental equipment.
- Respond promptly to dispatcher and scheduler requests for patient transportation services.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
- Attend required educational programs, in-service training sessions, and departmental meetings.
- Adhere to all hospital safety policies and procedures.
- Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, or safety concerns to the supervisor in a timely manner.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Experience
- Two (2) years of customer service experience preferred.
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
Certifications
- Must obtain Basic Life Support (BLS) certification upon hire.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of hospital departments and locations preferred.
- Understanding of basic body mechanics and safe patient handling techniques.
- Basic computer skills, including email, web-based training, and timekeeping applications.
- Ability to learn and follow departmental policies and procedures.
- Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively at a high school level.
- Ability to use smartphones and mobile devices to receive work assignments.
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills.
- Ability to maintain professional appearance and personal hygiene standards.
- Ability to demonstrate courtesy, compassion, and sensitivity to patient and family needs.
- Ability to safely transport patients and associated medical equipment.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand and walk continuously throughout the shift.
- Frequent pushing and pulling of patients and equipment, often involving considerable weight.
- Frequent repetitive use of hands, wrists, fingers, and elbows.
- Occasional lifting, lowering, bending, and crouching, including handling significant weight.
- Must successfully pass a back evaluation examination.
Working Conditions
- Frequent handwashing required.
- Occasional skin exposure to diluted cleaning agents.
- Potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, infectious diseases, and other healthcare-related hazards.
