Description

The Hull Construction Manager is responsible for leading and managing all hull construction activities associated with shipbuilding projects, ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project schedules, technical specifications, quality standards, and company procedures.

 

The role is accountable for maximizing productivity, optimizing resource utilization, managing manpower and budgets, and driving continuous improvement initiatives across hull fabrication, assembly, erection, and construction operations.

 

Key Responsibilities

1. Hull Construction Production Management

  • Lead and manage all hull construction activities, including fabrication, assembly, erection, and structural steel works.
  • Monitor production performance, productivity, quality, and progress to ensure project milestones are achieved.
  • Manage subcontractors and ensure their activities align with project schedules and quality requirements.
  • Coordinate closely with Engineering, Planning, QA/QC, HSE, and other production departments to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency, productivity, and operational performance.

2. Planning & Project Execution

  • Develop and implement hull construction execution strategies and production plans.
  • Conduct manpower planning, load analysis, block transportation planning, and construction sequencing.
  • Monitor project schedules and ensure timely completion of all hull construction activities.
  • Plan and coordinate material requirements, consumables, equipment, and resources to support construction activities.

3. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)

  • Ensure all hull construction activities are conducted in compliance with company HSE policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Promote a strong safety culture and maintain a zero-harm working environment.
  • Conduct regular site inspections, risk assessments, and safety reviews.
  • Ensure proper implementation of safe work practices and compliance with MSDS requirements.

4. Resource & Cost Management

  • Manage manpower allocation and utilization in line with project requirements.
  • Monitor labor productivity and take corrective actions where required.
  • Control project budgets, labor hours, equipment usage, and resource costs.
  • Analyze actual costs against budget and implement improvement measures to prevent overruns.
  • Coordinate with Asset Management and other departments to optimize resource sharing and eliminate duplication.

5. Yard & Dry Dock Space Management

  • Plan and optimize the utilization of dry docks, fabrication areas, block assembly zones, and yard facilities.
  • Ensure effective allocation of construction space to support current and future shipbuilding projects.
  • Coordinate movement, transportation, and positioning of hull blocks and structures within the yard.

6. Training & Development

  • Develop and maintain work procedures, method statements, and construction work instructions.
  • Identify training requirements for supervisors, engineers, and workers.
  • Deliver regular training programs to improve workforce competence, safety awareness, and productivity.
  • Promote continuous learning and operational excellence within the hull construction team.

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Shipbuilding Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
  • Additional project management or shipbuilding certifications will be an advantage.

 

Experience

  • Minimum 15-18 years of experience in shipbuilding, shipyard operations, or heavy engineering projects.
  • Proven experience in managing hull fabrication, block assembly, block erection, and shipbuilding construction activities.
  • Strong track record in leading large multidisciplinary teams within a shipyard environment.
  • Experience managing subcontractors, project schedules, manpower, and budgets.
  • Previous experience in large commercial, naval, offshore, or newbuild vessel projects is preferred.
