Job Profile Summary – Specialist Sensory Lab
Job Summary:
The Sensory Lab Specialist is responsible for leading one or more of Tyson’s sensory panels (Descriptive Analysis, Discrimination or Affective) and overseeing all aspects of one or more of Tyson’s sensory methods, including panel calibration, screening, training, panel calibration/maintenance, data interpretation and communication of findings while assisting in the execution of other sensory lab methods. This role applies specialized knowledge of sensory science, food science and research methodology to generate reliable sensory insights, refine panel performance and provide scientifically grounded recommendations to Sensory and R&D partners to influence important decision-making across the businesses served while concurrently elevating the sensory function.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Leads one or more Descriptive Analysis (DA), Discrimination (DI), and/or Affective Panel sensory methods; interprets sensory findings, streamlines reports, and provides clear and concise recommendations on a variety of food products
•Screens, trains, calibrates and maintains multiple panelists while continuously refining assigned sensory methods and strengthening proprietary DA/DI/Affective capabilities through disciplined, scientifically sound practices
•Supports execution of additional sensory studies, as needed, including coordination of test logistics and reporting activities, while maintaining the quality, integrity and interpretation of assigned sensory methods
•Partners closely with Sensory Scientists, R&D and cross-functional stakeholders to advise on research approaches and address product-related sensory challenges
•Maintains compliance with sensory lab standards, data integrity and established sensory lab best practices to support valid and repeatable results
•May assist with lab administration activities such as test prioritization, inventory, budgeting, protocol determination, and scheduling in support of Sensory operations
•Exercises sound professional judgement in navigating ambiguous situations, troubleshooting sensory and panel performance issues and adapting methods on processes to drive continuous improvement in response to evolving business and research needs
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Sensory, Food Science, Psychology, or a related field of study, is required. An equivalent amount of directly related work experience may be considered in lieu of the degree requirement.
Work Experience:
1+ years of work experience in sensory science, food product development, sensory research, or laboratory-based analytical work, is required. Experience leading sensory methods, interpreting results and communicating recommendations to business partners, is preferred.
Special/Technical Skills:
Demonstrated ability to execute sensory tests, analyze and interpret sensory data and provide clear recommendations on sensory studies such as discrimination, descriptive and consumer. Knowledgeable in basic sensory data analysis techniques such as DI tests, ANOVA and t-tests, is required, as well as demonstrated agility in adjusting to evolving business needs.
Solid proficiency in the use of Microsoft tools such as Word, Excel, & PowerPoint is required. Knowledge of sensory software such as SIMs or RedJade is a plus.

Must be able to foster a collaborative and positive team environment, demonstrating clear and open communication with colleagues.
