Job Description Summary

The Neuromuscular Testing Technologist I is responsible for assisting, working with and learning Autonomic Testing, Electromyography, and Nerve Conduction Testing under the direct technical supervision of an Neuromuscular Testing Technologist II, Neuromuscular Testing Technologist III, or the physician. The Neuromuscular Testing Technologist I will work collaboratively with the Neurodiagnostic team and Allied Health staff in order to meet the department’s strategic plan.

The Neuromuscular Testing Technologist I is an entry level position in the Neuromuscular Testing unit. The Neuromuscular Technologist I will learn to perform autonomic testing and EMG/NCS, including test set-up, patient education and preparation, maintaining patient safety during clinically significant events, and other related duties. Communication skills are essential for this position. During the institutional training timeframe, the Neuromuscular Technologist I will have direct technical supervision*. Once training is complete and all required institutional competencies and expectations have been achieved, the Neuromuscular Testing Technologist I may perform testing under indirect technical supervision**.

*Direct technical supervision requires that an Neuromuscular Testing Technologist II, III, or a physician who performs all technical aspects of autonomic testing must be physically present at all times during the procedure.

** Indirect technical supervision requires that an Neuromuscular Testing Technologist II, III, or an autonomic physician be immediately available to provide assistance and direction throughout the procedure.

Job Description

Principal Responsibilities

The entry level technologist will learn to perform the Autonomic Reflex Screen, Electromyography, and Nerve Conduction studies under the direct technical supervision of a fully trained autonomic technologist or physician who will be physically present at all times during the procedure. The training will include becoming familiar with:

  • Preparing room & equipment for autonomic testing procedures

  • Equipment instrumentation, artifact recognition and elimination and troubleshooting techniques

  • Performing the battery of tests included in the screening to the satisfaction of institutional standards

  • Ability to follow HIPAA, institutional infection prevention and control policies

  • Patient assessment and education as related to patient allergies, movement restrictions and cognitive function

  • Maintain patient safety at all times

  • Knowledge of contraindications to performing the test

  • Other related duties

Reporting Relationships

  • Reports directly to the Practice Manager

  • Reports to designated Physician for clinical supervision.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required

  • High School graduate or equivalent required. GPA of at least 2.8 or higher and an emphasis in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Algebra I and II preferred.

  • Current Basic Life Support certification required.

  • Enrollment in, or graduate of, a Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP), accredited CoA- NDT Program, or; an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred

  • Excellent communication skills (patient test preparation and education, other staff, physicians and other health care providers)

  • Relevant medical terminology, neuroanatomy, and physiology

Working Conditions

  • Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature.

  • Walking/sitting/standing on a consistent basis

  • Some kneeling/crawling

  • Reaching above shoulder height

  • Able to push or pull >40 pounds

  • Must possess good hearing, vision, manual dexterity and be able to perform effectively under stressful conditions

  • Ability to concentrate for long periods
