Program Overview for Sustainable Cities and Transport
WRI India's urban development work aims to transform the way cities are planned and designed to ensure that urban development benefits people, nature and climate. We focus on integrated solutions to long-standing urban challenges, leveraging evidence-based data, applied research and our network of partners and experts. We collaborate at all levels with the government, city administrations, urban stakeholders and partners to help cities become resilient, low-carbon and liveable while balancing their socio-economic goals. Our work seeks to shape a future where cities work better for everyone.
The Station Access and Mobility Program (STAMP) is WRI India's flagship initiative to improve access to urban mass transit through research, innovation, and pilot implementation. Launched in 2017 in Bengaluru, the program addresses one of the key barriers to metro ridership: inadequate first- and last-mile connectivity.
Since its inception, STAMP has expanded to Hyderabad, Kochi, Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, working with metro agencies, government partners, startups, and the private sector to strengthen multimodal integration around metro stations. Building on the learnings from previous editions, STAMP: Nudging Commuter Behaviour applies behavioural science and technology to encourage commuters, particularly high-income employees who primarily use private vehicles, to shift towards public transport.
