Job Description:
Hitachi Rail is looking for an enthusiastic self-motivated IS/IT/Cyber Systems Engineer who thrives in a fast-paced environment. The successful candidate is comfortable performing a wide range of tasks from administrative to strategic. The position is based in Sydney, Australia.
The IS/IT/Cyber Systems Engineer is responsible for the design, specification, configuration, deployment, and support of project IT and cyber infrastructure across the Sydney Metro West (SMW) project and future programmes, including Parramatta Light Rail Stage 2. The role ensures that system and product inputs are translated into practical, scalable, and maintainable IT solutions, covering data centre infrastructure, virtualisation platforms, storage, and end-user systems across OCC, BOCC, stations, and associated facilities.
The SMW project includes a distributed IT environment requiring consistent design and implementation across multiple locations. This includes centralised data centre environments, station-based systems, and operational end-user platforms. A dedicated engineering role is required to ensure that IT infrastructure is consistently defined, procured, configured, and deployed in alignment with system requirements and internal product standards, providing continuity across design, delivery, and early operations.
Key accountabilities:
The IS/IT/Cyber Systems Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end implementation of IT infrastructure, including:
Translating product line and system engineering inputs into IT system designs
Defining equipment specifications for procurement, including servers, storage, and end-user devices
Designing virtualisation environments, including Proxmox clusters across OCC, BOCC, and witness sites, as well as standalone station clusters
Configuring and deploying compute, storage, and virtual platforms
Designing, developing, and implement cyber solutions for the project
Supporting procurement activities, including technical evaluation of equipment
Supporting integration, testing, and commissioning of IT/Cyber systems
Providing technical support during deployment and early operations
Defining and configuring workstations, monitors, video walls, handheld devices, and associated infrastructure
Maintaining design consistency and configuration control across all system
Required skills and knowledge:
Experience in IT systems or infrastructure engineering within complex environments
Strong knowledge of virtualisation platforms, clustering, and distributed systems
Knowledge of Cyber technologies for the OT environment
Experience in server, storage, and end-user system deployment
Ability to support system configuration, testing, and commissioning
Understanding of resilient and scalable IT architecture principles
Experience producing technical documentation and supporting procurement
Relevant qualifications in Information Technology, Systems Engineering, or similar
