The Role and Why It's Important
The Grocery Manager supports the Store Manager in overseeing store operations, acting on issues in the manager's absence and ensuring the store runs efficiently, safely, and profitably. In this role, you'll lead the grocery team, drive sales and profitability, oversee food safety compliance, manage schedules and employee development, and help create the kind of positive, customer-focused culture that makes Hy-Vee exceptional.

What You'll Do
No two days are exactly the same, but here's what you can expect:
Assist the Store Manager in overseeing all store operations and act on issues in the manager's absence
Maintain a positive attitude and create an atmosphere of friendliness, teamwork, and accountability throughout the store
Provide prompt, friendly customer service and set a strong example for all grocery employees
Ensure food safety guidelines are followed and maintain compliance with all federal, state, and local health and food safety regulations; provide food safety training for all store employees
Coordinate all product recall events and take corrective action as necessary
Forecast, review, and may write the store labor schedule within the Store Director's guidelines
Recruit, interview, select, orient, and train new employees; handle employee issues and coordinate disciplinary procedures when necessary
Coordinate and assist in the performance evaluation process and review all employees at least annually
Work with department heads and designated personnel on schedules, labor, product purchasing, and merchandising to meet departmental goals
Monitor expenses and recommend cost reduction programs
Coordinate physical inventory for the store, verify accuracy, and prepare the P&L as requested by the Store Director
Determine location of ad and promotional displays and ensure product quality and quantities meet customer and store demands
Meet with sales representatives to determine new items, special purchases, pricing, and merchandising
Oversee building and grounds maintenance and all store sanitation to meet the Store Director's guidelines
Oversee cash accountability, accounting procedures, and audits to ensure compliance and investigate potential issues
Attend company meetings as requested and disseminate information to store-level employees
Participate in companywide events, special store events, and community activities as directed
Handle confidential information including employee salaries and files, and sales and profit data with discretion
Use and understand all hardware and software technology in the store
Adhere to all Hy-Vee policies and store guidelines and report to work when scheduled
Your Skills

Perform arithmetic, algebraic, and geometric calculations accurately
Report, write, or edit materials for publication; prepare and deliver presentations; interview, counsel, and advise people; and evaluate technical data
Lead and develop a team while building a collaborative, customer-focused store culture
Communicate effectively and professionally with customers, employees, vendors, and regulatory agencies

Accountable and Reports to: Store Director; Store Manager; Assistant Managers of Store Operations, Perishables, and Health Wellness Home
Direct Reports: Grocery Employees
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent experience required
One or more years of retail management experience required
Physical Requirements
Frequently stand and walk throughout a shift in sales, food service, or delivery areas
Where applicable to the role: ability to safely use sharp knives and blades for food preparation
Where applicable to the role: exposure to heat- and burn-related hazards associated with cooking, baking, or grilling equipment
Where applicable to the role: ability to operate a delivery vehicle in accordance with applicable DOT standards
Perform repetitive standing, walking, reaching, and bending associated with order fulfillment, POS transactions, and cleaning/sanitation duties
Working Environment
This is a fast-paced role in a retail store environment where you will be active throughout the store and surrounding areas. You will have exposure to dust, noise, and temperature extremes, with possible equipment movement hazards and occasional exposure to cleaning chemicals or solvents. Safety is always a priority, and training is provided to help ensure a safe and supportive work environment.
