Description

Under direction, this position will lead GIS initiatives and manage work requests from the Director's Office. This position will also be responsible for workflows that touch all three divisions (Division of Power, Division of Water Reclamation & Division of Water). Performs related duties as required.


Preferred Experience:
  • Knowledge of programming languages, particularly Python, for automating workflows.
  • Use of modern web mapping tools such as Experience Builder.

Develops and maintains geographic information system (GIS) data and related databases to delineate attributes of geographic areas;


Conducts specialized spatial analyses which may include analysis of nonspatial data;


Creates maps, reports, and documents using data and statistics derived from GIS technology;


Performs quality assurance and develops quality control procedures for GIS database(s);


Performs field inspections to acquire and verify geographic data;


Researches and interprets land records and maps from multiple sources; resolves conflicting geographic data through consultation with attorneys, title examiners, and others;


Digitizes spatial data, georeferences, plans, aerial photographic detail, and conventional and paper maps of varying complexities into GIS format;


Identifies, scales, and orients geodetic points, elevations, and other planimetric or topographic features and cartographic detail;


Prepares GIS applications design, modification, and documentation, including needs analysis and database and program design such as coding, logic, screens, and file input and output;


Converts data from text files, spreadsheets, and databases into maps and reports using GIS technologies; imports and exports data in a variety of formats;


Operates equipment such as plotters and printers for output of maps and graphics;


Makes oral and written presentations relative to various City projects utilizing GIS technology;


Attends meetings involving GIS projects;


Stays abreast of GIS technologies and industry standards;


May supervise subordinate staff engaged in performing GIS work.

Possession of a bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in revising, updating, and/or maintaining geographic information databases.  Substitution(s):  Possession of a valid certification as a Geographic Information Systems Professional (GISP) obtained through the GIS Certification Institute may substitute for the education requirement. Possession of a master's degree may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.  Additional years of experience using GIS software packages such as ESRI ArcGIS may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.  (Thirty (30) semester or Forty-Five (45) quarter credit hours equal one (1) year.)
