About the Position
Saint Mary’s Behavioral Health Center, part of NANA Healthcare Management, is seeking a dependable and compassionate PRN Phlebotomist to support our clinical team.
The Phlebotomist is responsible for safely and accurately obtaining blood specimens, preparing patients for blood draws, maintaining specimen integrity, and completing required documentation and related procedures. This position works closely with nursing and other members of the multidisciplinary treatment team in a behavioral healthcare environment.
The ideal candidate is comfortable working with patients who may be anxious, apprehensive, or hesitant about blood draws and can provide professional, calm, and compassionate care while maintaining strict safety and confidentiality standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare patients for blood collection and explain procedures in a clear, professional manner.
- Perform venipuncture and phlebotomy procedures accurately and safely.
- Assist patients who may be nervous or apprehensive during blood draws.
- Properly identify patients and accurately label specimens.
- Maintain specimen integrity throughout the collection and pre-analytical process.
- Ensure specimens are collected, handled, and processed according to established standards.
- Recognize and appropriately address unacceptable or compromised specimens.
- Gather and maintain necessary phlebotomy and laboratory collection supplies.
- Accurately document collection information and update patient records as required.
- Follow infection-control, blood-borne pathogen, safety, and sanitation procedures.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area.
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with applicable privacy requirements, including 42 CFR Part 2 when applicable.
- Communicate effectively with nursing, medical providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
- Follow clinical direction provided by the Director of Nursing, physicians, and other authorized members of the treatment team.
- Provide professional, respectful, and compassionate customer service to patients and staff.
- Maintain awareness of patient safety and behavioral-health-related risks within the treatment environment.
- Adapt to schedule changes and assist with other responsibilities related to phlebotomy and patient care as needed.
Qualifications
- Completion of a recognized Phlebotomy Training Program, including clinical training or externship, preferred.
- Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood specimen collection.
- Knowledge of proper specimen handling, labeling, storage, and transportation procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and professional boundaries.
- Ability to communicate effectively with patients and members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
- Ability to remain calm, professional, and compassionate when working with anxious or resistant patients.
- Current CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain as required.
- Ability to work safely around blood-borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials.
- Ability to successfully meet applicable background and employment requirements.

Work Environment

Physical and safety requirements include adherence to all applicable infection-control, blood-borne pathogen, workplace safety, and patient-safety procedures.
