The Department of Medicine, Division of Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a temporary Research Scientist/Engineer 1 to join their team.

 

About this Opportunity

Reporting to the Professor, the Research Scientist/ Engineer 1 will assist in developing new plasma proteomic-based diagnostics for melioidosis (Burkholderia pseudomallei infection) and study the efficacy of novel, targeted antimicrobial and immunomodulatory therapeutics for treatment of pulmonary infections in vivo.

 

This position is based at the UW Harborview Medical Center Research Campus.

 

Key Responsibilities

 

Laboratory and surgical procedures (75%):

• Purification, culture, and infection of human lung and blood cells

• Low and medium throughput DNA genotyping

• RNA extraction and expression

• Performing ELISA and multiplex cytokine assays

• Culture of pathogenic bacteria in liquid and solid media

• Aerosol infection of mice

• Administration of therapeutics to mice

• Handling and dissection of mice using sterile technique

 

Laboratory management and data analysis (25%):

• Maintenance of detailed laboratory records

• Data analysis using spreadsheet and graphical software

 

Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Biology or related field of study with 1 year of lab experience that includes surgical procedures.

 

Additional Qualifications

• Be able to identify technical problems in experiments and find solutions to basic problems.

• Excellent interpersonal skills - ability to interact with laboratory personnel and study subjects.

• Demonstrate high organizational skills and have knowledge of laboratory working environments.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in in vivo and translational research.

• BS level training in microbiology and chemistry.

• Experience with protein biomarker assays and human sample processing.

• Able to process data with basic statistical analysis, produce graphs, and develop preliminary conclusions and experimental plans.

• Familiarity with Microsoft Office suite and GraphPad Prism.

 

Working Conditions

• This position requires participation in the University of Washington Select Agent and Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) Research Program.

• Candidates must be willing and able to comply with specific occupational health and medical management requirements of BSL-3 certification.

• Candidates must be comfortable working with human specimens and animal subjects.

 

Compensation, Benefits and Position Details

Pay Range Minimum:

$56,448.00 annual

Pay Range Maximum:

$93,180.00 annual
