Autopsy Assistant | Per Diem

Summary

Assists Medical Examiner and Hospital Pathologists with autopsy preparations. Prepares bodies, specimen of human organs and autopsy suite to assist pathologists in post mortem examination.

Education

Associate’s Degree in the biological/anatomical, forensic, mortuary/funeral or criminal justice sciences from an appropriately accredited institution. Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Certification, Registration, and Licensure

None required.

Experience

Six (6) months of hospital morgue or funeral home experience preferred

Responsibilities

• Managing movement and storage of bodies before, during and after autopsy

• Assists the Medical Examiner and Pathologists to set up before and clean up after the autopsy

• During autopsy, assist with documentation of relevant information as directed by Pathologist or ME.

• During autopsy, assist in the collection and preservation of physical and biological evidence as directed by Pathologists or ME.

• Perform dissecting duties, such as opening skull and removing brain, and assisting in obtaining tissue and body fluid specimens

• Assist law enforcement in obtaining fingerprints as needed

• Prepare autopsy room, instruments, supplies and specimen containers.

• Maintain morgue, and autopsy room in (ready) condition for use by Pathologist or ME.

• Ensures the cleanliness and sanitation of autopsy facilities and equipment

• Maintain autopsy pathology specimen storage area.

• Dispose of medical and chemical waste using all required safety protocols.

• Prepares bodies for release to funeral directors

• Documents the release and receipt of remains in appropriate systems.

• Demonstrates compliance with corporate, departmental and job-specific requirements.

• Call for radiology services as needed

• Transport specimens to laboratory

• Transport tissue cassettes to histology

• Prepare brains for neuropathology conference

• Autopsy assistants are observing and performing tasks that are, at times, under unfavorable conditions; The post-mortem states of bodies often may be offensive to one's physical or emotional senses.

• Performs other duties as assigned.
