SUMMARY
Kansas City Kansas Community College (KCKCC) is seeking a Student Success Advisor to provide academic guidance and advising for prospective, newly enrolled, and continuing post-secondary adult learners whose academic goals include obtaining traditional academic or technical education, transfer education or continuing education for personal and professional growth.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • Provide comprehensive academic advising and retention services for KCKCC students with a high level of customer service
  • Advising duties include, but are not limited to: course selection and enrollment, scheduling, explaining course descriptions, assisting with decision-making and goal-setting, processing degree and certificate checks at graduation, explaining curriculum changes, interpreting and evaluating high school and college transcripts, assisting with transfer planning, supporting students with selecting a major based on personal and academic strengths, understanding and interpreting degree audits, evaluating and interpreting placement test scores, etc.
  • Assist with retention programs including early intervention efforts for academic success and developing academic recovery plans for students in unsatisfactory academic standing
  • Provide care, compassion, and support; commit to student success; empower students to meet challenges and recognize potential; value inclusive, supportive culture for student populations; act ethically and with professional integrity; value honesty and accountability to the student, institution, and the advising profession; respect and honor the inherent value of all students; build positive relationships; maintain a student-centered approach; treat students with sensitivity and equity
  • Provide quality academic advising that includes assessment of individuals' education and training, work habits, interests, skills, personal traits, and physical capabilities
  • Work collaboratively with all Student Affairs and Academic Affairs offices, deans, and administrators
  • Coordinate and/or serve on campus workgroups and committees to strengthen partnerships across the campus, broaden advising knowledge, and contribute to the overall campus community
  • Provide graduation plans and academic advising for students placed on academic probation, financial aid warning, and/or financial aid exclusion
  • Provide accurate, up-to-date information regarding degrees, certificates, course pre-requisites and all related academic criteria for graduation as outlined in the college catalog
  • Inform students of available support services and provide assistance with access
  • Make appropriate referrals for student support services on and off campus
  • Collect and analyze advising-related data on student retention and goal-completion, preparing periodic reports as requested
  • Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to students and to the Student Success Center; FERPA & Title IX compliance

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to train and work with diverse students and learners.

  • Ability to work with students, colleagues, and supervisors collaboratively and professionally.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree or higher in education, psychology, business, social-work, or related field
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working academic advising or case management.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with academic advising retention initiatives and early intervention processes
  • Experience with populations of students, including students with disabilities, English language learners, and/or first-generation college students
  • Bilingual in Spanish.


WORK SCHEDULE
Monday – 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Tuesday – 9:30 AM – 5 PM, Wednesday-Friday - 8:30 AM – 4:00 PM. . Must be able to work a variable schedule/hour to meet operational needs. May require evening and weekend hours. This position will primarily assist Main Campus students but may be asked to serve students at the Downtown Campus location.
