TRAINING OPPORTUNITY (11 Month Program)

Training Opportunity: Tribal Court Advocate Pathway Program (TCAPP)

Full Time 

Salary: Start at $25.00/hr. 

Requirements: Enrolled SRPMIC Community Members, High School Diploma or GED, associate degree preferred, with college coursework in legal studies or related field. 

Are you an Enrolled SRPMIC Member interested in studying tribal law and passionate about advocating for others as they navigate the legal system? The Conflict Counsel Office is seeking dependable, organized, and professional candidates for an 11 month training program designed to build core knowledge in tribal law and client-focused legal skills.

The Tribal Court Advocate Pathway Program prepares committed SRPMIC Members for the essential responsibility of practicing as advocates in the Salt River Community Court. Candidates should demonstrate integrity, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and dedication to service.  Selected participants must have the ability to commit to 32 hours per week for training during regular business hours.  

Program Commitment

Interested candidates must plan to make the program a priority for the 11 month duration. Selected participants will be required to attend classes, complete assignments, engage in practical training, and meet program guidelines..

This program offers a pathway to a rewarding career in service as a Tribal Court Advocate and allows individuals to make a meaningful difference in the lives of Community Members. 

All selected candidates will be required to successfully complete a drug screen and background check. 

Application Process

  2. Personal Statement (2–3 pages, double spaced) Your personal statement should address:
    • What motivates you to pursue work as a tribal court advocate and why this work is personally meaningful.
    • Strengths, experiences, or personal qualities that prepare you for a role requiring professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical decision making.
    • How this year-long program aligns with your long-term professional goals.
    • What service to your community means to you and how you would approach the responsibility of supporting tribal sovereignty and access to justice.
  3. Analytical Essay (2–3 pages, double spaced) Applicants should demonstrate clear communication, organized thinking, critical reasoning, and the ability to explain complex ideas thoughtfully. Choose one of the following essay topics:
Option A: Ethics and Judgment
A client has shared confidential information that could significantly affect their case but asks you not to disclose it. Withholding the information may create legal or ethical concerns.
  • How would you approach the situation?
  • What factors would guide your decision making?
  • How would you balance your duty to the client with your ethical obligations as an advocate?
Option B: Access to Justice
Access to legal representation can shape outcomes for individuals and families.
  • Why does access to a tribal legal advocate matter for a strong community?
  • What challenges might Community Members face when seeking legal help?
  • How can tribal court advocates strengthen both the justice system and tribal sovereignty
Equivalency - Any equivalent combination of experience and education that will allow the applicant to satisfactorily perform the duties of the job will be considered when filling the position.

Underfill Eligibility: An enrolled Community Member whom closely qualifies for the minimum qualifications for a position may be considered for employment under SRPMIC Policy 2-19, Underfill.

Prior to hire as an employee, applicants will be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Will be required to pass a pre-employment background/fingerprint check.
