Description
This position supervises the Sanitation division of the City’s Streets and Sanitation DepartmentMAJOR DUTIES
- Supervise and lead all sanitation department employees with associated tasks.
- Plan, organize, and prioritize daily work assignments for the sanitation department team members.
- Coordinate and oversee employees in support of city sponsored events.
- Coordinate and oversee the schedules the routes for sanitation pickup.
- Implement, maintain, oversee daily activities, and periodically review the sanitation routes for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Train, evaluate, and develop employees for sanitation related tasks using approved techniques and best management practices. This includes sanitation vehicle operations and maintenance operations for sanitation vehicles.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations and guidelines during sanitation maintenance activities.
- Collaborate with other municipal departments, such as engineering, gas, electric and city operations/maintenance, event teams, to coordinate projects and ensure efficient use of resources.
- Respond to and resolve citizen complaints and inquiries related to sanitation needs.
- Recommend promotions, demotions, and discipline for all assigned employees to the department manager or director.
- Complete yearly employee evaluations for assigned personnel.
- Maintains, specifies, and orders personal protection equipment (PPE) for the department.
- Develops budget alongside management for the department.
- Prepare reports and recommendations for department manager or director regarding sanitation department activities, budget, and future plans.
- Hold regular safety meetings with both Street and Sanitation Departments
- Conduct interviews for Sanitation Department
- Fill in for Sanitation manager or director when needed.
- Other duties as needed
- Strong knowledge of sanitation maintenance techniques, equipment, and materials
- Familiarity with relevant local, state, and federal regulations and guidelines related to sanitation maintenance and safety.

The Street and Sanitation Director assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include State DOT, County DOT, city department guidelines, and policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of related supervisory and sanitation duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.
- The purpose of this position is to supervise and participate in the work of a crew of personnel responsible for the maintenance of city sanitation. Successful performance contributes to safe and well-maintained city infrastructure.
- This position is on call for the department as a supervisor 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
- The work is performed in an office or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has direct supervision over all Sanitation personnel (15) and occasionally Street personnel.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work, usually associated with three to five years’ experience or service; five years of sanitation knowledge preferred
- Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, as required.
- Possession of a valid CDL commercial driver’s license Class B issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
