About the Role
Elsevier is looking for a Senior AI Evaluation Expert with a strong background and expertise across one or more scientific, technical, health, social science, or scholarly research domains to join our Evaluation Team. You will play a crucial role in managing evaluations for GenAI products across multidisciplinary research domains, supporting the design, execution and analysis of evaluation of solutions that support research-focused customers across scientific and technical domains. You will be an integral part of product development through live-production and release-readiness evaluation of GenAI products. You will work closely and in partnership with stakeholder groups across Academic and Research (A&G), including Product, Data Science, Technology, Commercial, and Marketing, to support targeted business outcomes. Through structured evaluation and scientific judgment, you will help ensure that our AI solutions reflect real-world scientific and scholarly understanding.
This role will report into the GenAI Evaluation Lead, A&G.
Key Responsibilities
- Apply scientific and domain expertise to design and oversee execution of evaluation studies
- Use AI and expert human review to prepare evaluation sets specific to product use cases
- Manage and participate in expert human and automated evaluation of GenAI output
- Support development of automated evaluation approaches through human validation
- Manage evaluators to score GenAI output through formal evaluation and user feedback
- Align evaluations with Operations, Product, and Marketing
- Translate evaluation findings into clear, documented recommendations to Operations and Product stakeholders
Required qualifications
- Strong academic (PhD minimum) background in one or more of the following: life sciences, physical sciences, engineering and technology, health sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, or related multidisciplinary fields
- Experience evaluating or validating AI or algorithmic outputs using scientific or scholarly research data
- Experience applying scientific or domain expertise in structured data or content environments (e.g. databases, taxonomies, or similar systems)
- Solid technical understanding is a plus (e.g. data flows, APIs, GitHub)
- Ability to work well in a matrixed organization and on cross-functional teams
- Strong management and communication skills
