The Portfolio Manager is responsible for underwriting, managing, and monitoring a portfolio of commercial and not-for-profit credit relationships. This role partners with Relationship Managers, Credit Risk Officers and Analysts to evaluate credit risk, structure financing solutions, maintain risk rating integrity, monitor covenant compliance, and identify emerging risks. The Portfolio Manager provides independent credit recommendations, manages renewals and modifications, supports client relationships, and ensures compliance with bank policies and regulatory requirements while delivering a high level of service to clients and business partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Following is a summary of the essential functions for this job.  Other duties may be performed, both major and minor, which are not mentioned below.  Specific activities may change from time to time. 

  • Underwriting & Credit Analysis: Lead the end-to-end underwriting process for new and existing commercial and not-for-profit credit relationships, serving as the primary point of coordination with clients and internal partners. Analyze financial performance, cash flow, debt capacity, and key risks; develop and present independent credit recommendations. Structure credit facilities, coordinate due diligence requirements, and ensure compliance with credit policy and regulatory standards. Identify emerging risks and industry trends and recommend appropriate risk mitigation strategies.
  • Portfolio Management: Accountable for managing an assigned portfolio by monitoring performance and trends, identifying issues, and driving timely remediation. Maintain risk rating integrity and oversee annual reviews, financial statement spreading, covenant compliance, and regulatory requirements. Manage portfolio amendments, waivers, renewals, and modifications. Demonstrate a proactive, forward-looking approach to risk management through independent analysis, transparent communication, and collaboration with clients and business partners.
  • Span of Control/Leadership:  No direct reports; provides cross-functional leadership across Coverage, Credit Risk, Product, Fulfillment, and Operations partners. Develops an independent point of view on credit risk and provides recommendations to appropriate decision makers. Builds trusted relationships through proactive communication, collaboration, and sound judgment. Influences credit discussions and risk decisions while ensuring timely, accurate underwriting and portfolio management. Mentors junior teammates and drives operational excellence through process improvements, support resources, and technology.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field and a minimum of five years of commercial credit underwriting, portfolio management, commercial banking, or related financial services experience. 
  • Strong understanding of commercial credit products, credit analysis, loan structuring, covenant analysis and risk management principles.
  • Experience analyzing financial statements, cash flow, and credit structures.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to effectively prioritize workload and manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Business, Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field.
  • Completion of a formal banking school or commercial banking development program.
  • Completion of a recognized commercial credit training program.
  • Proficiency with Truist operating systems and platforms.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex client relationships and independently evaluate and communicate credit risk.
