Description
PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:
The Network Engineer is a key technical resource for project delivery, responsible for designing and installing network solutions spanning switching, routing, wireless, and next-generation firewalls — increasingly across hybrid environments that connect on-premise infrastructure to the cloud. The Network Engineer works with Auxiom’s clients and internal IT professionals to implement best-practice solutions across a wide variety of projects, and serves as an escalation point for the service desk on complex network issues.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project Delivery & Execution
- Configure and install network hardware, including switches, routers, Wi-Fi access points, next-generation firewalls, VPN systems (Palo Alto GlobalProtect and comparable SSL/IPsec solutions), UPS and power distribution systems, and other network appliances.
- Configure server hardware and software as it relates to network and infrastructure security.
- Plan and execute server migrations from on-premise to cloud, including the networking, routing, and secure connectivity between premise and cloud environments.
- Assist with coordinating structured cabling and fiber optic solutions as needed.
Client Service & Delivery
- Assess client network infrastructure, identify gaps, and recommend necessary improvements.
- Assist with solution design for existing and prospective clients as needed.
Technical Standards & Architecture
- Create and maintain client network infrastructure documentation, both written and diagram-based.
- Apply monitoring and assurance tooling (e.g., Juniper Mist) to maintain visibility and proactively surface issues.
- Obtain and maintain vendor certifications for Auxiom’s key partners (such as Palo Alto Networks and Juniper Networks) as required — these partner certifications enable Auxiom to sell and service specific equipment lines.
Team Collaboration & Mentorship
- Support the Auxiom service desk with advanced troubleshooting and serve as an escalation resource for complex network issues.
KEY METRICS OF SUCCESS:
- Projects delivered on time and within scope.
- Minimal post-installation remediation.
- Successful production cutovers with minimal downtime.
- No critical security exposure at go-live.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
General
- Evidence of exceptional customer service skills.
- Evidence of dedication and a strong work ethic.
- Evidence of the ability to continually learn, improve, and adapt to a fast-paced, ever-changing technology landscape.
- Constant positive, can-do attitude.
- Ability to foresee overall client needs and future industry trends, and recommend strategic projects that position clients for future success.
- Proven record of taking initiative and following through on projects with limited supervision.
- Strong ability to organize and prioritize to meet deadlines across multiple projects and tasks.
- Ability to articulate needs, obstacles, and successes to the appropriate people in an effective and appropriate manner.
- Valid Michigan driver’s license.
- Able to lift and carry hardware and equipment, such as network switches, firewalls, and UPS units and their batteries, which can be heavier.
Technical
A highly qualified candidate will have an intermediate or advanced understanding of each of the following, with demonstrated expertise in at least two:
- Documentation, design, and diagram building of business-grade networks.

- Wireless networking (Juniper Mist, Ruckus).
- Enterprise border security and next-generation firewalls (Palo Alto Networks).
- Static and dynamic routing protocols (OSPF, EIGRP, BGP).
- Networking protocols and services connecting on-premise and cloud environments.
- Server OS (Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and newer).
- Network access control and traffic prioritization — 802.1x, RADIUS, QoS, and VoIP/SIP as they relate to networking.
- Moderate Linux (Debian/Ubuntu) skills and experience.
- Server virtualization (VMware, Microsoft Hyper-V, KVM).
- UPS and power distribution solutions (e.g., APC, Liebert).
- Endpoint security technology.
- Active Directory and general LDAP concepts.
- Understanding of structured data wiring and fiber optic concepts.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with cloud frameworks such as AWS and Azure, including prem-to-cloud server migrations and hybrid connectivity.
- AI fluency — comfort using AI tools to accelerate technical work, troubleshooting, and documentation.
- Scripting and automation with Python, PowerShell, or Bash.
- Experience with MSP-oriented security and network platforms such as SonicWall, Fortinet, Meraki, and Ubiquiti (in addition to the Palo Alto / Juniper core).
- 4+ years’ experience in a networking-focused role, ideally at an MSP or in an internal IT department.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related technical field, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated excellence with certification in one or more areas.
WORKING CONDITIONS & COMPENSATION:
- Regular predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
- Due to the nature of the job, some after-hours work may be necessary (evenings, weekends) to complete projects without disrupting clients.
- Specific technical duties for this position will depend on the candidate’s specific areas of expertise.
