History of Hargraves Community Center

Hargraves Community Center has always been a place built of, by, and for Chapel Hill’s Black community. Hargraves is a historic landmark on the North Carolina Civil Rights Trail for the center’s rich history – from its earliest days housing the B-1 Navy Band during WWII, to the first meeting of our local NAACP chapter in 1947, to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s visit to Chapel Hill, to the Freedom Schools of the 1960s.
