A DAY IN THE LIFE
As a Principal Engineer – Electrical Studies & Modeling within the Major Projects Group, you will serve as a technical subject matter expert, developing safe utility scale designs, training and mentoring technical personnel, and managing engineering deliverables from the project proposal stage through project completion. A typical day involves leading electrical systems analysis and modeling efforts, mentoring junior personnel, and collaborating with internal project teams, owners, vendors, and third-party engineering firms to explore innovative ideas and develop designs that are compliant with company, state, and federal regulations.
The Principal Engineer – Electrical Studies & Modeling, will develop metrics and set objectives related to engineering obligations, and will be a key proponent in the development and implementation of design standards.
STEP INTO THE ROLE
- Responsible for safe utility scale designs that compliment company, state, and federal safety regulations. Perpetuates designs compliant with applicable electrical codes, standards, and company best practices (NEC, NESC, IEE, NERC, IEC).
- Responsible for providing the most safe and economical means to satisfy the design life of the power plant. Will collaborate across multiple company departments, vendors, and outside firms to explore innovative ideas, methods, materials, equipment, software, and technologies that promote safety, lower cost, increase efficiencies and provide strategic benefits.
- Engages in the technical fields of load flow, short circuit, arc flash, protection and coordination, dynamic and transient stability, electromagnetic transients, islanded microgrid modeling, and inverter-based resource (IBR grid studies)
- Develops metrics and identifies initiatives for the teams to incorporate to enhance processes and collaboration, both internally and externally to the department and company. Sets goals and works with team members regarding goals and training priorities.
- Mentors junior personnel with the goal of accelerating their technical and commercial proficiency.
- Serves as the subject matter expert in client finance reviews and procurement technical decisions on high-risk issues that affect the company’s bottom line. Responsible for contract reviews that protect the company from high-risk design commercial issues.
- Supports innovative initiatives aimed at enhancing material, construction and technical means and methods.
- Establishes processes that ensure technical staff capture Owner requirements and applies those technical requirements into conceptual-procurement design.
- Establishes processes that ensure technical staff meld Owner requirements with our conceptual-procurement design and applies those technical requirements into final project design.
- Actively assesses and drives the improvement of the performance of engineering partners.
- Adheres to the company’s cultural basics and the National Society of Professional Engineer’s code of conduct. Must prioritize ‘We’ over ‘Me.’
- Position is estimated to require travel up to 15% of the time, subject to fluctuations as needs dictate.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
- 10+ years of engineering leadership experience in transmission, distribution, renewable energy, or power generation.
- Experience with modeling software programs such as PSCAD, ETAP, SKM, PSSE, and PSCAD/EMTDC.
- Bachelor's degree in electrical or power systems engineering from an ABET-accredited college required, or relevant equivalent industry experience.
- A Professional Engineering (PE) license is preferred but now required.
