Job Description Summary:

The Department of English at William & Mary, a public university of the Commonwealth of Virginia, seeks applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level in Anglophone Literatures of Modernity and Modernism. Appointment will begin August 10, 2027.

Duties include research, teaching, and service to the University. The applicant is expected to establish and maintain a vibrant research program that inspires a highly motivated undergraduate student body.

Teaching expectation is 2 courses per semester. We are particularly interested in individuals with teaching and research expertise that can extend understandings of modernism beyond the traditional U.K.-U.S. transatlantic axis, and who can teach more than one literary genre. Successful applicants will possess the skills to teach compelling courses ranging from introductory and more specialized courses in their field to the gateway course for our major (“Interpreting Literature”) and to early-to-mid-20th century Anglophone literature survey courses, broadly conceived. William & Mary English courses often support W&M’s interdisciplinary general education curriculum (the COLL Curriculum), and candidates interested in contributing to COLL are welcome to apply.

Job Description:

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in English, Comparative Literature, or a closely related field (with demonstrated graduate study, teaching, and research expertise in Anglophone modernist literatures) at the time appointment begins (August 10, 2027).
  • Applicants must have completed 18 graduate credit hours in the discipline in which they will teach.
  • Evidence of capacity to teach courses that expand understanding of modernism beyond the traditional U.K.-U.S. transatlantic axis.
  • Evidence of capacity to teach more than one literary genre.
  • Evidence of capacity to teach significant texts and issues in U.S. and/or U.K. modernist literatures.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of scholarly achievement or demonstrated potential as a scholar.
  • Evidence of capacity to teach a range of literary studies courses, from introductory gateway courses to period surveys and specialized topics courses.
  • Previous experience in undergraduate teaching and mentoring.

Applicants must apply online at https://go.wm.edu/VphZB3. All applications must consist of the following five documents, which are all submitted via the “Resume/Coverletter” upload field" Incomplete applications may not be considered. Each individual file must not exceed a size limit of 5MB. If necessary, candidates can compress multiple files into a single zip file for upload.

  • Curriculum vitae
  • Cover letter. Append to your letter a statement of teaching interests that describes your approach to teaching and mentoring (this may also incorporate a discussion of how your scholarly work informs your approach) and a statement of research interests. Each statement should be no more than 2 pages.
  • Unofficial graduate transcripts outlining proof of 18 graduate credit hours in the degree program(s) specified in the position description above. For international applicants, a letter of graduate credit hour completion from your graduate school may be submitted if unofficial transcripts are not provided by your university.
  • Two syllabi or course proposals, one for ENGL 353: International Modernism and one for either ENGL 352: Modern British and Irish Literature or ENGL 364: American Modernism to the 1960s.
  • A writing sample of 20-25 pages.

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position may require additional hours beyond the typical work week, including occasional overnight and weekend work as needed to meet the business needs of the operation.

Applicants are encouraged to reflect on teaching and mentoring practices that advance academic excellence and success of all students in literary studies in your cover letter, teaching, and/or research statements.

Candidates who reach the first-round virtual interview stage will be prompted to submit online the names and email addresses of three references who will be contacted by the system with instructions for how to submit a letter of reference.

For full consideration, submit application materials no later than October 9, 2026. Applications received after the initial application deadline will be considered if needed. All required supplemental application materials mentioned above must be clearly identified and included with your application for full consideration.
