Role description:

Arcadis is seeking an Environmental Planner Intern/Co-op to join our Environmental Planning and Permitting team in Markham, Ontario for a 4- or 8-month co-op term or Professional Experience Year (PEY) beginning in January 2027. This position offers an exciting opportunity for students interested in environmental planning, permitting, environmental assessment, infrastructure development, and natural resource management to gain hands-on consulting experience while supporting projects across Ontario and other regions as needed.

In this role, you will assist with desktop environmental reviews, environmental permitting support, project planning activities, and field data collection for a variety of infrastructure and development projects. Working alongside environmental planners, biologists, ecologists, engineers, and project managers, you will gain exposure to the environmental planning process and help support project teams delivering sustainable solutions for our clients.

Projects are often fast-paced, collaborative, and multi-disciplinary, providing opportunities to develop technical, analytical, communication, and project coordination skills.

This role is ideal for students looking to build a career in environmental consulting particularly in the areas of environmental planning, environmental assessment, permitting, or natural resource management.

Role Accountabilities

As an Environmental Planner Intern/Co-op, you will support environmental planning and permitting activities while gaining practical experience in environmental consulting.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Assisting with desktop environmental reviews and preliminary site assessments using GIS, mapping tools, aerial imagery, and publicly available environmental databases.
  • Supporting environmental planning, permitting, and regulatory compliance efforts through research and data collection.
  • Assisting with the preparation of technical reports, permit applications, environmental assessments, and other project documentation under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary project teams that may include environmental planners, biologists, cultural heritage specialists, engineers, and project managers.
  • Participating in field visits and site assessments to collect environmental data and document existing site conditions.
  • Using GPS and other field technologies to support environmental surveys and project planning activities.
  • Supporting project coordination tasks, including tracking project information and deliverable schedules.

This role is primarily office-based, with occasional opportunities for fieldwork. Field assignments may require walking over uneven terrain, working outdoors in varying weather conditions, and carrying equipment weighing up to 30 pounds. Occasional travel within Ontario may be required.

Required Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Environmental Planning, Environmental Science, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous internship, co-op, academic, or volunteer experience related to environmental planning or environmental consulting.
  • Familiarity with GIS software, including ArcGIS Pro or similar mapping applications.
  • Understanding of environmental permitting and regulatory processes in Ontario.
  • Coursework or experience related to environmental assessments, land use planning, ecology, or natural resources management.
