Introduction to team
The Lodging connectivity Organization at Expedia Group is seeking an experienced backend developer and a seasoned technologist with a passion for building robust, scalable, and high-performance applications that help millions of people plan their travels and create lifelong memories. Join us as we revolutionize the travel industry!
The organization owns a core lever of Expedia Group's growth: expanding global lodging supply and making it a source of competitive advantage. We build and operate the platform that sources, normalizes, and serves third-party lodging inventory — powering the shopping, booking, servicing, and claims journeys that travelers rely on every day. Through resilient API integrations and AI agentic workflows, we bring diverse partner content onto a single platform and make it competitive, accurate, and bookable at scale.
We are part of the partner connectivity platform that serves as the backbone of Expedia's business, powering an efficient two-way marketplace that bridges supply and demand. Our platform sources properties and handles more than 3M transactions per minute. Built with modern technologies like Java, Kotlin, Spring, GraphQL, Kafka, DynamoDB, ML, Elasticsearch, and Redis on AWS, our ecosystem supports millions of travelers in finding the best travel products tailored to their needs.
If you're passionate about creating transformative solutions, tackling large-scale engineering challenges, and shaping the future of lodging supply, we'd love to have you on our team. Join us, and let's redefine the way the world travels together!
In this role, you will:
- Design, build, and evolve scalable, reliable services and software components, including system design, low-level design, API design, and data modeling to support customer-facing and platform experiences.
- Lead the technical design across domains and delivery of complex, multi-quarter initiatives across the 3PI supply system that support shopping, booking, servicing, and claims journeys.
- Take end-to-end ownership of complex features or services, from technical design through implementation, deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement in production.
- Break down large, ambiguous business problems into clear technical solutions that can be reused across multiple domains and services, driving streamlined execution by the team.
- Write, review, and maintain high-quality, well-tested code while driving best practices in code quality, security, observability, resilience, and performance.
- Improve technical quality and operational excellence by reducing incidents, enhancing observability, and optimizing performance, reliability, and cost.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions that improve traveler and business outcomes, applying AI-driven systems, tools, and workflows to production-grade software.
- Mentor and guide other engineers, sharing best practices in software engineering, testing, and architecture, and raising the overall engineering bar for the team.
- Partner with product, analytics, design, and engineering teams to apply data-driven decision making, define success metrics, and improve system health and user outcomes over time.
- Contribute to architectural direction by participating in design reviews, proposing improvements, leading communities of practice, and helping shape long-term technical strategy.
- Technologies we use: Java, Kotlin, Spring, GraphQL, Docker, Kafka, DynamoDB, Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Redis, Datadog, Splunk, and AWS cloud.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field; or equivalent related professional experience.
- 10+ years of professional, post-college backend software development experience in an object-oriented language (e.g., Java, Kotlin, or similar).
- Proven experience owning end-to-end delivery for services or components — design, implementation, testing, deployment, and support — within a multi-service or multi-domain environment.
- Deep understanding of software design principles, algorithms, and data structures, with a strong command of core engineering practices including object-oriented design, testing, and version control.
- Hands-on experience designing and consuming APIs, working with data models and storage systems, and applying system design principles to build reliable, maintainable systems.
- Hands-on expertise with AI/ML frameworks and tools, and experience applying AI/ML concepts to real-world products.
- Experience building on cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) with sound architectural patterns and scalable, cost-efficient, production-quality systems.
- Strong communication skills and a highly effective collaborator — able to articulate ideas to teammates, peers, and leaders, support them with data, and incorporate others' feedback to find common ground.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience designing and evolving service and application architectures for high-traffic, distributed systems, including clear API contracts, data models, and low-level designs.
- Demonstrated track record driving technical direction for services or domains, making data-informed tradeoffs across scalability, reliability, performance, and cost.
- Experience with partner or third-party integrations, supply/inventory systems, or high-volume marketplace platforms.
- Strong focus on operational excellence, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, and continuous improvement of production systems and developer workflows.
- Experience leading cross-team technical initiatives or migrations, influencing engineering best practices across a domain, and guiding teams on effective and responsible use of AI-assisted development and testing tools.
- A self-starter who embraces change and is always open to replacing what you built yesterday with something better today.
