Job Description:

Cashier II

Purpose: 

Under general supervision, this position resolves conflicts with patrons, ensures that cashiers have sufficient change, resolves equipment failures, and oversees the collection of fees for events and non-events.

Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: 

Essential duties and functions, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following. Other related duties may be assigned.

  • Opens and closes parking facilities.

  • Verifies cash tills, operating banks, and change funds, and confirms collections are accurate and balanced.

  • Unlocks door, elevator access, and entrance gates.

  • Places appropriate signage.

  • Prepares and posts deposits.

  • Provides relief for cashiers for breaks and lunch.

  • Provide transportation to cashiers and cash funds to main central garage.

  • Oversees the daily events to ensure that coupons are being utilized where applicable and fees are being collected for events.

  • Responds to customer questions and resolves issues.

Responsibilities - Supervisor and/or Leadership Exercised: 

  • May provide leadership, work assignments, evaluation, training, and guidance to others.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

Must possess required knowledge, skills, abilities, and experience and be able to explain and demonstrate, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.

  • Ability to give direction and lead subordinates. 

  • Ability to make change for cash accurately. 

  • Ability to handle a high-volume of customers. 

  • Skill in providing customer service.

  • Skill in operating a cash register, calculator, and other basic office equipment.

  • Ability to solve problems.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.

  • Ability to accurately complete daily reports. 

  • Ability to verbally communicate effectively.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Graduation from an accredited high school or equivalent, plus two (2) years of cash handling experience.

Licenses and Certifications Required: 

  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience working in retail or other customer service related industries.

  • Experience using Point-of-Sale (POS) systems or similar software.

  • Experience using Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.

  • Experience communicating and interacting with diverse populations and communities, including individuals of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds.

Preferred Skills:

  • Ability to fluently communicate (reading, writing, speaking) in English and Spanish.

Other:

  • Ability to travel to more than one work location.

The purpose of the Seasonal – Cashier II position is to provide customer service to our patrons, visitors, and stakeholders at the Zilker Botanical Gardens. This position will assist with admission and gift shop operations by:

  • Collecting admissions fees in a timely and efficient manner.

  • Answering customer phone calls and questions as needed.

  • Providing information about the Garden and assisting with promoting programs and events to visitors.

  • Opening and closing the building and garden gates.

  • Maintaining and monitoring the security and compliance with policies of visitors and guests.

  • Working with diverse populations and communities.

  • Demonstrating professionalism, customer service, communication, organization, and on-the-spot problem solving skills.

Work Schedule:

  • Sunday – Saturday, rotating schedule between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

  • May be required to work during special events, evenings, weekends & holidays.

  • Work schedule and location is subject to change based on department needs and programs.

  • May be required to work during city emergencies such as extreme weather events.

Salary:

  • $22.37 per hour

  • Driving Requirements: This position requires a Texas Class C driver license or the ability to acquire one by your hire date. External New Hires must meet the City of Austin’s Driver Record Evaluation (DRE) requisite. To be considered for a driving position, applicants cannot have more than three moving violations or a total of six Driver Record Evaluation points within a period of thirty-six (36) months.

  • Physical Requirements: Tasks may involve bending, lifting, walking, carrying, or using a force equal to lifting up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Must be physically and mentally able to work with participants adapting to a variety of conditions such as daily walking, hiking, climbing, standing, balancing, kneeling, stooping, running, bending, crawling, swimming, stretching, and reaching in rugged terrain. Tolerate loud noise associated with enthusiasm and excitement. Ability to work outside in all types of weather and/or inclement conditions, and in confined spaces.
