JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Coordinator of Workplace Safety manages the College’s workplace safety programs to protect employees against harm and maintain safe working conditions. Provides leadership and direction to all College departments/areas to identify environmental health and safety best practices and leads the implementation of these practices.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS

  • Formulates and suggests work safety standards and enforces procedures. Risk prevention areas include hazardous materials exposure, accidents, fires, or other unsafe conditions. Meets compliance and reporting requirements of federal or state regulations.
  • Works with the Director of Learning and Development to provide new employee safety training as well as coordinating the ongoing employee safety training program.
  • Develops and maintains the College’s written safety plan.
  • Directs activities of the safety committee.
  • Assists supervisors with identifying, developing and delivering safety training on topics such as general workplace safety, fire safety, blood borne disease, electrical, mechanical, vehicle and confined space safety and first aid/CPR to employees.
  • Works with supervisors to identify and make available the correct personal protective equipment for each employee. 
  • Evaluates potential workplace safety hazards and recommends preventive measures to avoid realization of those hazards.
  • Coordinates all hazardous material disposal and will be responsible for maintaining documentation of all safety training, budget expenditures and other records as necessary/appropriate.
  • Assists in the technical interpretation of local, state, and federal rules, regulations, laws, and codes. Submits required safety and environmental reports to city, state, and federal agencies.
  • Documents workplace safety training efforts.
  • Serves as a professional and technical resource to the College and community in field of workplace safety.
  • Participates in the review of existing and planned purchase of all equipment used in the facilities to insure adequate safe guards are incorporated, along with assurance that the facility remains in compliance with applicable state/federal regulations.  Maintains existing equipment at all the MCC sites, including but not limited to AED’s, First Aid Kits, Eye Wash Stations, Fire Extinguishers as well as and safety signage.
  • Stays abreast of changes to laws and regulations that may impact the College.
  • Attend work activities or programs as scheduled or assigned.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm

This is an on-premise position located on the Fort Omaha Campus with service to campuses and centers district-wide.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of applicable OSHA standards and generally acceptable safety practices.  
  • Knowledge of laws and requirements regarding employee safety committees and employer safety responsibilities. 
  • Knowledge of emerging trends in workplace safety.
  • Excellent organization and record keeping skills.
  • Skilled in using Microsoft Office and Windows software.
  • Planning and organizational skills.
  • Communications skills both written and verbal. Ability to communicate safety requirements in terms that can be understood by all employees.
  • Skill in demonstrating cooperation and professionalism.
  • Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to effectively present to large and small groups.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work well with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism, patience and understanding in stressful situations.
  • Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Three (3) years of full-time, work-related experience in workplace safety.
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience considered.
  • Ability to travel between campuses for meetings or position responsibilities.
  • Must pass background check.
