SUMMARY:
The Financial Aid Counselor is the first point of contact for the Office of Financial Aid (OFA) in The Warren Alpert Medical School, responsible for counseling students and parents about all aspects of the financial aid process and directing the activities of the office. The Financial Aid Counselor manages aid for all BioMed Master’s programs and is also responsible for reviewing the aid applications for the MD population to determine federal loan eligibility. The Financial Aid Counselor meets with students enrolled in the Program in Liberal Medical Education (PLME) program prior to medical school and determines their eligibility for need based scholarships and loans upon matriculation. The Financial Aid Counselor manages student appointments, and all communication OFA maintains with MD students throughout the year. The Financial Aid Counselor manages the medical school financial aid application cycle, working with the Banner BDMS system, to organize and store all of our documents in a paperless way. Arranges and schedules financial aid workshops and events. The Financial Aid Counselor has a comprehensive understanding of Banner and other OFA systems as the communications specialist for medical students seeking financial aid assistance.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s degree with 1-2 years of experience preferably in an academic environment or equivalent combination of education/experience.
Experience utilizing computer systems as well as skills with various applications(Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Federal EDE, Banner, e.g.) preferred.
Job Competencies
Effective interpersonal and strong oral and written communication skills are essential in order to interact regularly with prospective and current medical students and their parents regarding sensitive and confidential information.
Excellent organizational ability is required in order to manage the flow of considerable paperwork, perform several tasks simultaneously, maintain meticulous records and adhere to strict deadlines.
Detail oriented
Ability to work independently as well as be a productive member of a team
Must be able to respond with confidence and good judgement in order to be able to make sensible, independent decisions that result in prompt, top-quality service to students and other constituencies.
