Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Ensures only horses scheduled to race are permitted in the paddock by verifying the identity of the horse

• Releases identified horses to handlers for transfer to paddock for saddling

• Notifies the steward upon detecting any discrepancy in a horse’s identity

• Records physical changes in horses, such as weight increase or scar received since last inspection in order to keep identification records current

• Supervises the identification of any horse on the grounds of Oaklawn before approving the horse for tattooing

• Maintains a card that lists all equipment worn and the tattoo number for each horse racing at the meeting

• Compares the equipment actually being used on the horse with the approved equipment listed on the card

• Ability to work required overtime

• Regular punctual attendance required

• Other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Must be able to read, write legibly, understand and speak English

• Ability to work at a fast pace in often crowded/noisy environment

Work Environment & Physical Demands

• Ability to work weekends, evenings and holidays

• Ability to stand for periods of time and work in inclement weather when necessary

Education & Experience

• Must be 21 years of age

• High School Diploma or equivalent required
