Job Summary:
The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) provides skilled physical therapy treatments and interventions under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist in accordance with the State of Maine Physical Therapy Practice Act, physician orders, and Cary Medical Center policies.
The PTA assists patients across the lifespan—from pediatric through geriatric populations—to improve mobility, reduce pain, restore function, and maximize independence. Services may be provided in a variety of settings including inpatient, outpatient, skilled nursing, homecare, schools, and contracted community locations as assigned. The PTA works collaboratively with Physical Therapists, physicians, nursing staff, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to provide high-quality, patient-centered care. PTAs practice under the supervision of licensed Physical Therapists and implement established plans of care.

Essential Job Duties:
- Implement individualized treatment plans established by the supervising Physical Therapist.
- Provide therapeutic exercise, gait training, balance activities, transfer training, neuromuscular re-education, functional mobility training, and therapeutic modalities as delegated.
- Monitor patient response to treatment and communicate changes in condition to the supervising Physical Therapist.
- Accurately document treatments, patient progress, and responses according to departmental, regulatory, and payer requirements.
- Maintain timely documentation within departmental standards.
- Assist the supervising Physical Therapist with patient reassessments by collecting objective treatment data.
- Educate patients, families, and caregivers regarding home exercise programs, safety, mobility techniques, equipment use, and discharge recommendations.
- Ensure treatment areas and equipment remain clean, organized, and safe.
- Follow infection prevention and patient safety standards.
- Communicate effectively with physicians, nursing staff, case management, and other members of the healthcare team.
- Participate in interdisciplinary care planning and patient conferences as appropriate.
- Demonstrate flexibility by providing services in various clinical settings as assigned.
- Support quality improvement initiatives and departmental performance goals.
- Participate in community education, wellness programs, health fairs, and hospital outreach activities.
- Maintain productivity standards while delivering exceptional patient care.
- Foster positive relationships with patients, families, coworkers, physicians, referral sources, and community partners.
- Perform other duties and assigned.
- Complies with local, state and federal laws and regulations.
Requirements
Education/ Licensure & Certification/ Experience
- Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant program.
- Current Maine Physical Therapist Assistant License in good standing.
- Current BLS (Basic Life Support) certification or ability to obtain within organizational requirements.
- Previous experience in acute care, outpatient rehabilitation, skilled nursing, or homecare preferred.
- New graduates are encouraged to apply.
Availability:
- Must be available to work Monday through Friday, with occasional weekends and holidays
- Hours depend on customer and departmental needs, flexibility required
- Able to drive amongst Cary's locations and contract sites.
