Description
Under direction and Supervision of the Senior Environmental Compliance Officer, this position is a temporary Operator in Training (OIT) that supports preparation and implementation of a variety of water, sewer, pretreatment, and solid waste quality assurance programs and activities. This position works closely with City of Brawley personnel from the Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants, Streets and Utilities Divisions, and City Administration to implement:
Pretreatment Program and Sewage Collection System:
- Industrial Pretreatment Program and Sewage Collection & Stormwater System Operations and Maintenance
- Solid & Organic Waste Program
- Cross Connection Control Program
- Water Distribution Program
- Water Conservation Program
Pretreatment Program and Sewage Collection System:
- Support City’s Environmental Compliance / Water Distribution Operators with commercial and industrial sewage dischargers. This includes preparing for sampling events and monitoring of commercial and industrial sites for flow and wastewater discharge loading for pollutants of concern.
- Recognize and prevent illegal dumping into the City’s wastewater & stormwater collection system
- Maintenance and operation of city sewage pump stations
- Assist with code enforcement for Street Sweeping, Trash, Recycling, Green and Organic Waste contamination
- Conduct site visits and determine location of backflow devices and hazards
- Assist with sending letters to business, commercial and residential customers who have backflow assemblies
- Assist with Implementation of Waterline Flushing Program
- For the reduction of TTHMS and HASS disinfection byproducts
- Assist with implementation of Valve Exercising Program
- Operate valve maintenance machine (WACHS Valve Exercise Machine)
- Answer and address water-related complaints (low pressure, taste and odor, turbid water, potential cross connections)
- Lead and Copper Rule
- Assist with Enforcement of water conservation ordinances
- High School diploma or equivalent
- College [AA1]coursework in water, wastewater and pretreatment programs is preferred.
- Works in extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, wind, and the occasional rain.
- Walks, stands, and sits for long durations
- Sits and works on computer desk for approximately 30% of time
- Drives City vehicle and/or trucks
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs
- State of California Water Distribution Operator, Water Treatment Operator, or Wastewater Treatment Operator Coursework (Required)
- Valid Class C, California Driver’s License. License is required at time of appointment and must be maintained throughout employment. A safe driving record is highly desirable.
- Valid Class C California Driver’s License
- General knowledge of state water & water distribution requirements, water codes, sewer and stormwater systems, pretreatment requirements, state solid & organic waste laws, city ordinances and safety regulations
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing
- Ability to provide presentations and updates to the general public
- Follow oral and written instructions
- Read and write English effectively and give oral and written instructions
- Get along and work cooperatively with Public Works Staff and its various divisions, staff and other City departments
- Work independently or as a member or a work crew
- Complete assigned tasks completely and efficiently
- Computer skills (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Tokay Software, and SCADA.)
- Ability to read spreadsheets and analyze trends and outcomes
