Job Summary

The Lab Technician performs analytical testing of transformer-related samples to determine chemical and physical properties using prescribed methods, appropriate instrumentation, and sound laboratory practices. This role supports lab operations by preparing, testing, documenting, interpreting, and communicating results accurately so facility teams can make timely operational and compliance decisions. The position maintains instruments, supplies, work areas, records, and waste streams in accordance with EPA, QA/QC, safety, environmental, and applicable testing certification expectations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform routine and complex analysis of samples to determine chemical and physical properties in accordance with prescribed procedures, work instructions, and quality expectations.
  • Prepare samples, operate laboratory equipment, and use appropriate analytical methods to generate accurate and repeatable test results.
  • Calibrate, verify, and utilize laboratory instrumentation, and understand the operating requirements, limitations, and basic troubleshooting needs of assigned instruments.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment, coordinate service or outside vendor support when needed, and help ensure equipment is available and functioning for required testing.
  • Complete all paperwork, electronic records, logs, and hardcopy documentation associated with analytical procedures in a neat, accurate, and timely manner.
  • Read, interpret, evaluate, and communicate test data to the Lab and Compliance Manager and appropriate facility personnel.
  • Identify results that fall outside required specifications or expected ranges and support problem solving, retesting, documentation, and escalation as appropriate.
  • Follow EPA, regulatory, QA/QC, and applicable local, state, federal, and testing certification requirements related to laboratory operations.
  • Maintain testing supplies, reagents, chemicals, consumables, and materials needed to support consistent lab performance.
  • Handle, label, store, and use testing chemicals safely and in accordance with company procedures, SDS guidance, and environmental expectations.
  • Properly manage waste generated through analytical procedures, including collection, labeling, storage, and communication of disposal needs in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Keep the laboratory, workstation, tools, and shared work areas clean, organized, safe, and ready for daily operations.
  • Use assigned shop or laboratory equipment and tools responsibly and report concerns related to equipment condition, safety, or test reliability.
  • Communicate effectively with facility technicians, operations, compliance, and management to support testing priorities, sample flow, and operational needs.
  • Support integration of laboratory work with other areas of the facility and company by providing reliable testing support, responsive communication, and practical problem-solving.
  • Follow company environmental and safety programs, policies, standard operating procedures, and personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned based on workload, business needs, or management direction.


Minimum Requirements

Education/Certifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Science, laboratory, environmental, technical, or related degree or certification preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain applicable testing certifications or internal qualifications required for assigned laboratory work, if required by the company or regulatory standards.
Experience
  • Prior laboratory, science, technical, environmental, manufacturing, transformer service, oil testing, or related experience preferred.
  • Experience using laboratory instruments, maintaining records, following prescribed methods, or working in a regulated quality or safety environment preferred.
  • Experience working around oils, chemicals, industrial equipment, or facility operations preferred.
Knowledge Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend written instructions, safety information, test methods, records, and basic technical documentation.
  • Basic arithmetic skills and ability to accurately record, compare, interpret, and communicate numerical test data.
  • Working knowledge of basic laboratory practices, sample handling, chemical handling, records management, and QA/QC expectations.
  • Ability to use basic hand tools, laboratory equipment, and computer systems used for data entry, recordkeeping, and communication.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, organization, and follow-through when performing tests and documenting results.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability when results, equipment, documentation, or sample conditions require review or escalation.
  • Ability to follow EPA, environmental, safety, regulatory, certification, and company procedure requirements without shortcuts.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with technicians, managers, vendors, and cross-functional partners in a professional manner.
  • Ability to maintain a safe, clean, and orderly workstation while managing changing priorities and workload needs.
  • Ability to work around oils, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, mechanical equipment, electrical conditions, and other industrial laboratory or facility conditions while using required PPE.
  • Ability to perform work requiring close visual acuity, including reviewing data, reading information on screens, inspecting samples or small details, and using measurement devices.
