Job Description

The Role

General Motors is transforming the transportation industry through advanced electrical architectures, high-performance computing, and the integration of ADAS and infotainment capabilities. GM’s Software-Defined Vehicle 2.0 (SDV2) platform is our next-generation centralized computing architecture. At the heart of this transformation is an in-house designed, liquid-cooled central compute unit that enables faster development cycles, more efficient software updates, and seamless scalability across every GM brand.

As an Electrical Hardware Engineer - Compute Validation, you will play a key role in the validation and release readiness of next-generation high-compute ECUs that enable automated driving, vehicle intelligence, and immersive digital experiences. This role is intended for an experienced engineer who can independently drive validation activities across prototype and production-intent hardware, with direct ownership of environmental and EMC validation planning, execution, issue tracking, and closure. You will work cross-functionally with design, systems, software, mechanical, manufacturing, and vehicle integration teams to ensure robust hardware performance across real-world automotive conditions.

Key Responsibilities

Compute Validation Ownership

  • Own validation planning and execution for central compute hardware across bench, subsystem, and vehicle-relevant test environments.
  • Develop validation strategies, test plans, and coverage aligned to product requirements, design risk areas, and program milestones.
  • Drive issue identification, debug coordination, root-cause tracking, and closure of hardware validation concerns.
  • Partner with design engineers to ensure validation feedback is incorporated into design updates, test escapes are addressed, and lessons learned are captured.

Environmental and EMC Ownership

  • Own environmental validation activities including thermal, vibration, mechanical shock, humidity, and other applicable reliability test scopes for compute hardware.
  • Own EMC/EMI validation coordination, including test readiness, test execution support, issue triage, and corrective action follow-up.
  • Work with internal and external test labs to define setups, review results, document failures, and track actions to closure.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve hardware robustness and compliance performance based on validation outcomes.

Bring-Up, Debug, and Test Execution

  • Lead board bring-up and validation activities for prototype and early development hardware, including power-on sequencing, debug, and functional verification.
  • Perform and guide bench-level testing including signal quality checks, voltage/current measurements, thermal characterization, and functional stress testing.
  • Support failure analysis and debug of issues related to power, interfaces, component interactions, environmental exposure, and EMC performance.
  • Review data from validation events and provide clear recommendations on risk, readiness, and next actions.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Collaborate with silicon partners and internal engineering teams across hardware, software, systems, safety, and feature development.
  • Support integration across electrical, mechanical, thermal, manufacturing, and vehicle teams to ensure complete validation coverage.
  • Contribute to design reviews, test reviews, milestone assessments, and technical discussions with a strong validation perspective.
  • Provide day-to-day technical guidance within validation workstreams and help align execution across internal contributors and test partners.

Quality and Compliance

  • Ensure validation activities support compliance to applicable automotive standards and expectations including design robustness, EMC/EMI, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Support DFMEA, DVP&R, test traceability, issue management, and requirement-to-validation coverage.
  • Document validation results, technical risks, and open issues in a clear and actionable manner for program leadership and engineering teams.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 2-5 years of experience in hardware validation, electronics engineering, embedded systems, or compute platform development.
  • Strong experience with hardware validation of complex electronic modules or ECUs.
  • Working knowledge of:
    • Digital electronics, power architecture, and embedded hardware fundamentals
    • High-speed interfaces such as PCIe, Ethernet, USB, and DDR
    • Hardware bring-up, lab debug, and failure analysis methods
    • Environmental and EMC/EMI validation processes for automotive or similar high-reliability applications
  • Hands-on experience using lab equipment such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, power supplies, logic analyzers, and related debug tools.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and technical communication skills.
  • Ability to independently manage validation tasks and drive issues to closure across cross-functional teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with central compute, ADAS ECUs, infotainment, or other high-performance embedded computing platforms.
  • Experience owning or leading environmental and/or EMC validation activities for an automotive electronic module.
  • Understanding of automotive electronics standards, design for reliability, and hardware release processes.
  • Familiarity with DVP&R, DFMEA, requirement traceability, and structured validation documentation.
  • Experience with tools such as Microsoft Office, Mathcad, or similar engineering tools.
  • Effective communicator who can operate with ownership while collaborating across a fast-paced product development organization.
