Description

The Payroll Director - Americas, is responsible for leading the end-to-end payroll operation across nine countries, including the United States, Canada and seven Latin American countries. The role is accountable for ensuring payroll is delivered accurately, compliantly and on time while driving operational excellence, continuous improvement and an exceptional employee experience.
The United States represents the largest payroll within the region. The successful candidate will bring extensive experience managing large-scale US payroll operations within a complex, multi-national and multi-state environment.
As a member of the Global Payroll Leadership Team, the Payroll Director will partner closely with HR, Finance, Employment Tax, Legal, Engineering, Internal Audit and external payroll providers to ensure robust governance, strong controls and delivery against strategic objectives.


Key Responsibilities

Payroll Operations

  • Lead payroll operations across the Americas, ensuring accurate and timely payroll delivery across nine countries.
  • Own operational performance, service quality, compliance and employee experience across the region.
  • Ensure payroll processes comply with all legislative, tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Oversee relationships with payroll vendors and service providers, ensuring contractual service levels are achieved.
  • Monitor operational KPIs and implement actions to continuously improve performance.
  • Leadership
  • Lead, develop and inspire a geographically dispersed team of payroll professionals.
  • Create a high-performing, inclusive and accountable team culture.
  • Coach leaders and build succession plans to strengthen organisational capability.
  • Foster collaboration across regional and global payroll teams.


Risk, Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure robust payroll controls and governance frameworks are embedded across all countries.
  • Lead remediation activities for payroll issues and drive sustainable process improvements.
  • Manage operational, compliance and financial risks, ensuring issues are escalated appropriately.
  • Support internal and external audits and ensure timely closure of audit actions.


Stakeholder Management

  • Act as the senior payroll representative for the Americas region.
  • Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across HR, Finance, Employment Tax, Engineering and Legal.
  • Present operational performance, risks and strategic initiatives to senior leadership.
  • Partner with Works Councils, employee representatives and regulatory bodies where required.

Transformation & Continuous Improvement

  • Lead regional payroll transformation initiatives supporting the Global Payroll strategy.
  • Drive process standardisation, automation and operational efficiency.
  • Champion data quality, reporting and analytics to support informed decision-making.
  • Leverage technology and digital solutions to improve payroll accuracy and employee experience.
  • Experience
  • Significant experience leading large, complex payroll operations within multinational organisations.
  • Extensive expertise managing high-volume United States payroll is essential.
  • Experience overseeing payroll operations across Canada and Latin America is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated success leading regional or global payroll teams.
  • Strong understanding of payroll governance, controls, compliance and risk management.
  • Experience working with outsourced payroll providers and payroll technology platforms.
  • Proven track record delivering payroll transformation and continuous improvement programmes.
  • Experience managing executive stakeholders and operating within complex matrix organisations.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, Human Resources, Accounting or a related discipline.
  • Professional payroll qualification (APA, CPP or equivalent) preferred.
  • Lean, Six Sigma or project management qualifications are advantageous.
