Description

Why this role matters

Our Payments department processes millions of transactions per day across hundreds of payment methods, including crypto. We also use AI and ML in our payment systems, for example [fraud detection, smart payment routing, risk scoring]. We're looking for a hands-on architect who will own the architecture of the payments domain: from designing the target state to writing the first lines of code in a proof of concept. You won't just draw diagrams - you'll build things too. You'll work side by side with nine engineering teams, review their code and designs, and make sure our systems stay reliable, scalable, and easy to change as we grow.

The role is based in our Limassol office, Cyprus. In case of relocation, we offer full relocation support for you and your family to make your move smooth and worry-free.

What you'll actually do

  • Own the target architecture of the Payments domain, aligned with company strategy and the company-wide architecture.
  • Drive the technical roadmap for the domain: find gaps, prioritise improvements, and split large projects into clear delivery stages.
  • Build and review: create proofs of concept, test new technologies, and review code and designs.
  • Design solutions for areas: crypto payments, KYC flows, and AI/ML-based features, from idea to production.
  • Work with the business from day one: help product teams and stakeholders turn business needs into solid technical solutions.
  • Manage architectural tech debt: make it visible, explain the risks, and agree on a plan with the teams.
  • Contribute to company-wide technology decisions together with architects from other tribes: shared standards, technology choices, and technology lifecycle.
  • Raise the engineering level: mentor engineers in system design, run design reviews, and introduce practices such as RFCs and ADRs.

Who we’re looking for

  • 8+ years in software engineering, including 2–3+ years designing systems as an architect, tech lead, or head of development.
  • You've written production code in the last 2 years and still enjoy it.
  • Strong skills in Python or Go, and the ability to read and review code in the other.
  • Experience with high-load, low-latency, high-availability distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with our core stack: PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, REST/gRPC, Kubernetes.
  • Good understanding of distributed systems patterns: idempotency, sagas, outbox, consistency trade-offs, resilience patterns.
  • Practical knowledge of security for financial systems: encryption, tokenisation, secrets management, and familiarity with PCI DSS.
  • Ability to explain complex trade-offs clearly, both in writing (RFCs, ADRs, C4 diagrams) and to non-technical people.
  • Ability to influence teams without formal authority.
  • Fluent English: you'll write design documents and communicate with stakeholders.

Nice to have

  • Experience integrating ML models into production systems (model serving, feature stores, real-time scoring).
  • Experience with KYC processes and integrations with KYC providers (identity verification, document checks, onboarding flows).
  • Experience building payment systems: PSP/acquirer integrations, card schemes, ledgers, reconciliation.
  • Experience with AML: transaction monitoring, sanctions screening.
  • Experience with crypto payments or blockchain integrations (wallets, on/off-ramp, custody).
  • Experience with trading or broker systems.
  • Experience with Temporal, Clickhouse

What we offer along the way

  • Competitive salary and annual performance bonus
  • Full relocation support for you and your family — flights, housing, visas, and legal assistance included
  • Top-tier health insurance with full family coverage — medical, dental, vision, mental health — plus life insurance for peace of mind
  • Unlimited learning opportunities: external courses, English lessons, career and leadership development
  • Education allowance covering school and kindergarten fees
  • 21 working days of annual leave, plus public holidays and fully paid sick, maternity, and paternity leave
  • Employee appreciation program: branded gifts, birthday day-offs, celebration budgets for weddings, newborns, and milestones
  • “Get to know Team” trips — meet colleagues across our global hubs, along with company-wide offsites that raise the bar
  • Employee share scheme — grow with us
  • Branded MINI Cooper Countryman company car and private parking
  • Free in-house sports clubs, Sanctum Club gym access, and jet skis
  • Access to a Corporate doctor
  • Exclusive discount program with cafes, gyms, and local services
  • Expat tax perks: up to 50% income tax exemption
  • Support with the naturalisation process for relocated employees
