Job Posting Location:

Job Posting Title:

Visiting Assistant Professor of Art

Job Description:

ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.

JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Art Department at Pomona College invites applications for a one-year, non-tenure track, Visiting Assistant Professor. The position is full-time and has a teaching load of five courses for the academic year. Each semester, the successful candidate will teach two painting courses. One will be an introductory course covering the fundamentals of oil painting; the other, an intermediate or advanced painting course, which should include a figure painting course during the year. In line with the learning outcomes of our department, these courses should address the foundational, theoretical, and critical skills associated with the creation of art. The fifth course can be from the candidate’s own area of interest and research, and could include performance, installation, multimedia, drawing, art theory, use of technology or design.

The Art Department includes five faculty members, with full participation expected in department events and pedagogical functions such as exhibitions and critiques for our majors. The department has its own gallery, offering abundant opportunities for visiting artists to exhibit.

Our students come from a range of backgrounds and interests, and the preferred candidate should demonstrate a commitment to engage with our wide-ranging student body, adapting their pedagogy to reach those who are coming to an art class for the first time, while providing challenges for students with more experience.

Pomona College is a selective private liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 1700 students, all undergraduates, and a student/faculty ratio of seven to one. Recognized as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges, Pomona offers instruction in all major fields of the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and is strongly committed to the value of a residential educational community. Pomona is the founding college of the seven-member Claremont Colleges, a consortium located 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Fifty-two percent of our current cohort of first-year students (class of 2023) self-identify as domestic students of color, 11% international, and 19% are first generation college students. Preference will be given to applicants with a commitment to the College's goal of improving higher education for underrepresented students.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability or potential to teach and mentor exceptional students of diverse backgrounds—utilizing pedagogical practices that are rigorous, inclusive, and which promote academic equity.

Additional responsibilities include managing the painting studio: ordering and maintaining materials and supplies within the department’s budget, overseeing proper use of storage and supplies, following safety procedures for solvents and waste disposal, and keeping the studio in good condition for classes and student work.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education--Required: MFA in Painting/Fine Arts

Teaching Experience--Required: College teaching experience

TO APPLY:

Upload a single PDF document (up to 5MB) that includes: a) a letter of application, b) CV (with a portfolio URL link of your own and students’ work), c) samples of course syllabi for painting, d) statement of teaching philosophy and inclusive learning practices with a proposal for the 5th course, and e) teaching evaluations. You will be asked to provide contact information for three references.

Review of completed applications will begin on November 10 and will continue until the position is filled. Please send inquiries to [email protected].

This position is not eligible for travel or moving expenses. Employment is contingent upon providing proof of the legal right to work in the United States as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 for the duration of the contract, July 1, 2027 to June 30, 2028. Salary Range: $74,000 - $81,000. Salary is commensurate with years in rank and teaching experience.

As an equal opportunity workplace, Pomona College is committed to fairness regardless of race, color, ancestry, religion, sex, national origin, sexual orientation, age, citizenship, ability, gender identity or Veteran status. Through its Strategic Vision, Pomona College remains steadfast in its goal of creating workplace environments where all can flourish. The department welcomes applications from scholars who are ready to contribute to providing equitable access to education and expanding opportunities in the liberal arts and natural sciences.

REQUIREMENTS: Instruction begins on Monday, August 30, 2027 for the fall semester and on Tuesday, January 18th, 2028 for the spring semester. After submitting proof of work authorization and completing onboarding, Visiting Assistant Professors are expected to prepare for their classes and attend the New Faculty Orientation, held in the weeks before classes start in the fall. This non-tenure-track position is instructional and does not require student advising, faculty service or participation in faculty governance.
