Position Information
Washington Performing Arts seeks an experienced and collaborative social media professional to further develop content for Children of the Gospel Choir (COTG) social media handles, supporting efforts to enhance awareness of the choir, increase choir membership (ages 9-19), and promote COTG performances. This is an excellent opportunity to work with a cooperative, supportive, and passionate program team that enriches our D.C. community through celebrating and mastering the American art form of gospel music, while inspiring audiences through dynamic performances of traditional, contemporary, choral, and inspirational musical styles.
COTG is an auditioned-membership choir, a distinction that calls for a communications approach separate from the revenue- and brand-driven work of Washington Performing Arts’s existing marketing and communications team. This contractor role is a seasonal (October-July) addition to that team, working in partnership with Washington Performing Arts’s full-time staff to build out a dedicated content strategy for COTG's Instagram and TikTok handles, and COTG Alumni Facebook Group. Video, photo, and other content developed through this role will also support additional fundraising efforts (videos, website, social media) on behalf of the Gospel Music Programs.
Independent Contractor
The Contractor shall perform all the Services as an independent contractor of Washington Performing Arts, and nothing contained in the agreement shall be deemed to create any association, partnership, joint venture, or relationship of principal and agent or master and servant, or employer and employee between Washington Performing Arts and the Contractor or any of its Affiliates, Agents, employees, or subcontractors thereof, or to provide either party with the right, power or authority, whether express or implied, to create any such duty or obligation on behalf of the other party. Washington Performing Arts and the Contractor recognize that Contractor is free to take on assignments with other entities, so long as such work does not compete with or impede the completion of WPA assignments.
Insurance
Washington Performing Arts is not responsible for procuring any such insurance coverage of independent contractors. This includes but is not limited to unemployment insurance, worker’s compensation, and/or disability insurance. Independent contractors discharge and releases Washington Performing Arts, its partners, and their respective trustees, directors, officers, employees, and agents from any and all liability for injury, loss, damage, obligation, or penalties which may be sustained in connection with participation in this project.
Equal Employment Opportunity Statement:
Washington Performing Arts subscribes to a policy of Equal Employment Opportunity and will not discriminate against any employee or applicant because of race, age, sex, color, sexual orientation, physical or mental disability, protected veteran status, religion, ancestry or national origin, marital status, genetic information, political affiliation, and gender identity or expression. In addition, the District of Columbia adds protection for marital status, personal appearance, sexual orientation, family responsibilities, matriculation, or political affiliation. Washington Performing Arts’ employment decisions are made.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities Content Planning & Collaboration
- Meet regularly with the Marketing team to develop and maintain a content calendar and posting schedule for COTG social media handles, aligned with the choir's rehearsal, retreat, and performance cycle.
- Coordinate with the Gospel Music Programs team to schedule on-site access for content capture at rehearsals, retreats, and other program activities.
- Participate in content review and approval processes with the collaborative team prior to any posting.
Content Capture
- Must be able to capture high-quality content with their own equipment, including video in at least 1080p resolution.
- Film and photograph b-roll, rehearsal footage, and performance moments, including vocal technique instruction, repertoire study, and dance rehearsals.
- Conduct and record video interviews with choir members, families, clinicians, and Gospel Music Programs staff.
- Develop individual artist and clinician profile stories to humanize the program and highlight its impact through evergreen storytelling.
- Capture high-quality photo and video assets suitable for both social media and future fundraising use.
Content Production & Posting
- Edit video and photo content into platform-appropriate formats (e.g., Reels, TikTok, Stories, YouTube Shorts) for COTG's social handles.
- Write captions and post copy in a voice and tone specific to COTG's audience, distinct from Washington Performing Arts’s broader institutional voice.
- Apply consistent geotagging and location tagging for D.C. and DMV-area schools, churches, and community sites to build hyper-local visibility and engagement.
- Post approved content according to the agreed-upon schedule and workflow.
Audience Engagement & Strategy
- Tailor content to speak directly to prospective COTG members (ages 9-19) and their families, as well as the network of churches, schools, and teachers identified through the Gospel Music Programs team's fall 2026 recruitment efforts.
- With Washington Performing Arts’s Digital Content Manager, monitor engagement and platform performance to refine content strategy over the course of the one-year initiative.
Asset Management & Cross-Team Use
- Organize and archive raw and edited media assets in a shared system (Resource Space; Marketing’s external drive) accessible to Washington Performing Arts teams.
- Flag and prepare select content for use in broader Gospel Music Programs fundraising efforts, including fundraising videos, website features, and donor-facing communications.
Specific Conditions of Work This contract position embeds within the Marketing and Gospel Music Programs departments for 8-10 hours per week. The contractor's focus is exclusively on the COTG recruitment, awareness, and performance-attendance goals outlined above, delivered through social media content development and implementation. Content will be captured on site at evening and weekend COTG rehearsals (largely in D.C. at Shiloh Baptist Church), as well as at performances. The contractor must provide their own transportation to all rehearsals, performances, and events. This is a 1099 independent contractor position. Compensation is payable monthly upon submission and approval of an invoice. The contractor acts as an independent entity and is not an employee of Washington Performing Arts. Zoom- and in-person meetings with marketing staff will occur on a regular basis, addressing KPIs and other content benchmarks.
