Description

Assistant Flood Risk and Drainage Consultant
Arbtech

Who we are
We are Arbtech – the UK’s fastest-growing and number-one ecological and arboricultural consultancy. After an incredible period of growth, we’re expanding our finance team and looking for someone who wants to be part of our mission to balance nature and progress. If that sounds like you, join us as a Credit Control Administrator at our head office on the outskirts of Chester, near Broughton Business Park.

Part of the Celnor Group
Celnor Group is a UK-based environmental services group operating across the Testing, Inspection, Certification and Compliance (TICC) landscape. With a growing portfolio of specialist businesses, Celnor provides essential services that protect people, property and the environment.

While each business retains its own identity, culture and technical specialism, all are supported by a central group function that invests in people, systems and long-term sustainable growth.

Job details
Are you a recent graduate looking to launch a career in flood risk and drainage consultancy, or already working at assistant level and ready for your next step? Are you looking for a flexible, remote-based role where you can develop real technical skills on live projects from day one? Are you seeking hands-on mentoring, structured CPD, and a clear route to becoming a chartered professional?

If you answered yes to any of the above...then this could be your opportunity to be part of an experienced, dynamic and fast-paced team within a successful, multi-disciplinary consultancy.

We're looking for someone reliable, proactive, organised and solutions-oriented — with sharp attention to detail and a genuine interest in flood risk, hydrology, and sustainable drainage.

What you will do
A successful candidate will ideally be someone with a relevant degree who is eager to develop their technical knowledge and has the goal of progressing into a confident, autonomous consultant. You'll be supported by experienced engineers as you learn to prepare FRAs, design drainage strategies, and engage with planning authorities, LLFAs, and water companies. If you already have consultancy experience, you'll take on your own projects sooner and your salary will reflect that.

There will also be opportunities to assist our Geo-Environmental team from time to time, supporting work where water, ground conditions and land contamination overlap.
  • Prepare Flood Risk Assessments (FRAs) for planning applications across all flood zones
  • Assist in the design of drainage strategies and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS)
  • Undertake hydraulic modelling and drainage calculations using industry software
  • Carry out site visits and surveys
  • Liaise with clients, planning authorities, Lead Local Flood Authorities, and statutory consultees
  • Assist the Geo-Environmental team periodically on projects where water, ground conditions and land contamination overlap, including preliminary land quality assessments
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams and stakeholders
  • Contribute to continuous improvement, compliance and quality standards
Who you are
You are an experienced and motivated professional who brings a practical, solutions-focused mindset. You will ideally have:
  • A degree in a relevant discipline, ideally Civil Engineering (Geography, Environmental Science, Earth Sciences or similar also considered)
  • A full UK driving licence and access to your own vehicle
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • A self-motivated attitude and a willingness to learn quickly
  • Experience with MicroDrainage, Flow+, InfoDrainage or similar drainage design and hydraulic modelling software
  • GIS and/or AutoCAD skills
  • Understanding of UK planning policy relating to flood risk (NPPF, PPG)
  • Any prior experience in flood risk, hydrology, or drainage (including academic projects or placements)
  • A basic understanding of how water, ground conditions and land contamination interact, or a willingness to develop this knowledge
  • A high level of attention to detail and accountability
  • A collaborative approach and a commitment to doing things the right way
Join us
You’ll be joining a business where your contribution matters and where professionalism, integrity and teamwork are genuinely valued. As part of the wider Celnor Group, you’ll benefit from group-wide investment, shared expertise and opportunities to develop your career as the organisation continues to grow.

Benefits
At Arbtech we are a people focused business, supporting your growth and career development are our priority.
  • Competitive salary commensurate with the role
  • Pension scheme, with contributions increasing over time
  • Equipment and tools to support you in your role
  • Employee Assistance Programme
  • 28 days of Annual leave increasing to 40 days after 12 months
  • Many other benefits, gradually increasing over your career with us
