The Department of English and Cultural Studies within the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus invites applications for a full-time, one-year Lecturer position in Canadian Literature and First-Year Writing, with an expected start date of September 1, 2026, or mutually agreed time.

Preference will be given to applicants with a PhD in the field and with experience teaching at the post-secondary level. ABD files or files with considerable teaching experience will also be considered. Teaching will consist of eight sections per year, with one or two sections taught in the summer terms. The successful candidate will be expected to teach Canadian literature courses at the second, third and fourth year level, along with first-year literature-composition courses. Expertise teaching across genres in settler Canadian literature, along with experience in teaching first-year writing, will be required. The successful candidate’s course load will likely include ENGL 222: Literature in Canada, ENGL 333: Canadian Fiction, and ENGL 470: Canadian Studies (a topics course), along with sections of first-year English. Delivery modes are normally in-person. While this is primarily a teaching position, lecturers are also expected to participate fully in the affairs of their departments and may fulfill service obligations to the University and community, including regular attendance at meetings and participation in the activities of the program, as well as

  • Assistance with curriculum review and design of courses
  • Committee work, as determined by the Head

Salary: $70,216 per year. All positions are subject to budgetary approval.

How to apply:

Please email your application to [email protected], with the subject line ENGL Lecturer application.  Documents must be submitted in electronic format as e-mail attachments.  Acceptable formats include those with a file extension of .doc, .docx, or .pdf.

Applications must consist of the following:

  • A letter of application
  • A complete curriculum vitae (detailing post-secondary teaching experience)
  • A statement of teaching philosophy and teaching evaluations

New applicants must also arrange to have three confidential letters of reference emailed to [email protected] with the subject line “ENGL lecturer reference letter”.

Inquiries can be sent to Dr. Jordan Stouck, Department Head, Department of English and Cultural Studies at [email protected]

The deadline for applications is July 9, 2026.

Equity and diversity are essential to academic excellence. An open and diverse community fosters the inclusion of voices that have been underrepresented or discouraged. We encourage applications from members of groups that have been marginalized on any grounds enumerated under the B.C. Human Rights Code, including sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, racialization, disability, political belief, religion, marital or family status, age, and/or status as a First Nation, Metis, Inuit, or Indigenous person.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
