The Role
Your Role
As a Mainframe DB2 Database Administrator, you’ll help keep critical DB2 for z/OS database environments secure, resilient and performing at their best. You’ll combine hands-on database administration with problem-solving and continuous improvement, supporting the systems that customers rely on while helping them evolve within increasingly integrated, hybrid IT environments.
You’ll be working across the DB2 lifecycle, from installation, configuration and upgrades to performance optimisation, recovery and ongoing operational health. When complex issues arise, you’ll investigate what is happening, identify the underlying cause and work with application and infrastructure teams to restore service and prevent repeat incidents.
This is also an opportunity to look beyond day-to-day support. You’ll use your knowledge of DB2 and the wider z/OS environment to identify opportunities to improve reliability, capacity and operational efficiency. You’ll work with application teams on database design and SQL performance, automate repeatable administration activities and help ensure database environments are ready for both current workloads and future change.
What Yo will Do
- Administer and maintain DB2 for z/OS environments, ensuring high availability, performance, and capacity management.
- Perform installation, configuration, upgrades, migrations, and maintenance of DB2 subsystems and database objects.
- Execute and manage backup, recovery, and disaster recovery processes to safeguard critical business data.
- Troubleshoot database incidents, conduct root cause analysis, and implement preventive measures.
- Monitor and optimize database performance, including SQL tuning, access path analysis, and buffer pool management.
- Collaborate with application teams on database design reviews, performance tuning, and issue resolution.
- Drive continuous improvements in database reliability, automation, and operational excellence to support mission-critical workloads.
Your future at Kyndryl
This role opens the door to many career paths, both vertical and horizontal, and there may be opportunity to travel. It’s a great chance for database administrators or other techs to break into the cloud. It’s also a solid path to become enterprise or chief architect or a distinguished engineer! Whatever you see for yourself, you’ll find the opportunity here.
Who You Are
You’re good at what you do and possess the required experience to prove it. However, equally as important – you have a growth mindset; keen to drive your own personal and professional development. You are customer-focused – someone who prioritizes customer success in their work. And finally, you’re open and borderless – naturally inclusive in how you work with others.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- 9+ years of experience managing IBM DB2 for z/OS in enterprise production environments, with expertise in database maintenance, monitoring, performance tuning, and troubleshooting.
- Hands-on expertise with DB2 utilities including REORG, RUNSTATS, COPY, RECOVER, LOAD, UNLOAD, REBUILD INDEX, and CHECK DATA.
- Experience supporting DB2 subsystem installation, upgrades, migrations, maintenance, and version upgrades (DB2 v11/v12/v13).
- Strong knowledge of z/OS, JCL, TSO/ISPF, REXX, SMP/E, RACF, and Mainframe infrastructure.
- Experience with database performance tuning, SQL optimization, access path analysis, buffer pool tuning, and capacity planning.
- Expertise in backup, recovery, disaster recovery planning, and business continuity support for DB2 environments.
- Proficiency in monitoring and troubleshooting DB2 issues using tools such as OMEGAMON, SPUFI, QMF, BMC MainView, and DB2 Admin Tool.
- Experience supporting 24x7 production environments, incident resolution, problem management, and root cause analysis.
Preferred Technical and Professional Experience
- Experience supporting complex enterprise mainframe environments and 24x7 production services
- Understanding of ITIL-aligned change, release and service management practices.
