About the Role

The Operating Room/Organ Preservation Technician assists the operating room staff before, during and after donor organ recovery procedures, as well as during organ transplant procedures and other hepatobiliary procedures. Under the direction of a physician, prepares organs for perfusion and monitors preservation parameters during perfusion, reporting perfusion parameters to the surgeon. As a certified operating room technician, possesses the knowledge of the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combines the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools to facilitate a physician’s performance of invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic procedures. Responsible for maintaining the Organ Preservation Lab, including ordering, and rotating supplies, and ensuring proper inventory and storage. Ensures that Organ Preservation Lab equipment is optimally maintained. Collects data per UNOS requirements and University Hospital protocols. This position reports to the Operating Room Nursing Management for OR Tech and Organ Preservationist responsibilities and to the Administrative Director of Liver Center administratively as a team member.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

• Assists the Operating Room team before, during, and after donor organ recovery, transplant surgeries, and hepatobiliary procedures.

• Under the direction of a physician, prepares organs for perfusion, monitors preservation parameters throughout the perfusion process, and communicates findings to the surgeon.

• Applies advanced knowledge of sterile and aseptic techniques to support safe and effective surgical procedures.

• Utilizes expertise in human anatomy, surgical procedures, and operating room instrumentation to assist physicians during invasive, therapeutic, and diagnostic interventions.

• Maintains the Organ Preservation Laboratory, including monitoring inventory levels, ordering supplies, rotating stock, and ensuring proper storage practices.

• Ensures all Organ Preservation Lab equipment is properly maintained, operational, and compliant with established standards.

• Collects and documents data in accordance with UNOS requirements and University Hospital policies and procedures.

• Supports both Operating Room Technician and Organ Preservationist functions while collaborating with multidisciplinary clinical teams.

• Reports operationally to Operating Room Nursing Management for clinical responsibilities and administratively to the Administrative Director of the Liver Center as a member of the transplant team.

• Contributes to the delivery of high-quality patient care by supporting organ preservation, transplantation, and related surgical services.

 

 

Qualifications

What You’ll Bring

 

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Associate’s Degree in a science-related field preferred.
• Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technician Program required.
• Certified Surgical Technician (CST) certification through the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (or equivalent) required.
• American Heart Association (AHA) CPR certification required.
• Minimum of two (2) years of surgical technology experience required.
• Experience with transplant procedures and organ preservation preferred.
• Experience in other medical fields (e.g., LPN, EMT) may be considered at management’s discretion.
• Must demonstrate understanding, patience, and tact when interacting with physicians and co-workers.
• Strong attention to detail required.
• Excellent hand-eye coordination required.
• Must be self-motivated and able to work efficiently and effectively.
• Willingness to work collaboratively with employees of varying skill levels, knowledge, and abilities.
• Must be available to provide on-call coverage for liver transplant procedures.

Compensation (NJ Job Transparency Law)

In compliance with New Jersey’s Pay Transparency Act, the hourly range for this position is TT/2200: Probationary Rate:$33.62 - Job Rate $34.12- Two (2) Year Rate $35.15.University Hospital considers multiple factors when determining compensation, including (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the candidate’s relevant work experience, education and training, key skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational needs.
