Position Summary

This position works with the Director of Undergraduate Studies (DUS) and Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to organize and administer programmatic components essential to the educational mission of the Chemistry Department. Additionally, the incumbent serves as a key liaison to Arts & Sciences, the Office of the Registrar, and Chemistry faculty and teaching teams. Attention to detail, excellent time management and prioritization skills, responsiveness and clear communication, and the ability to interact well with Chemistry faculty and students are extremely important in this role. The incumbent will play a key role in leading and evolving aspects of department operations related to undergraduate and graduate education and professional development.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lead academic coordination efforts for the department and liaise with A&S on academic matters, including: maintaining the undergraduate and graduate Bulletins; managing course and section entries in Workday Student, serve as key point of contact with A&S for summer and academic year courses, authorizing, reviewing, and assisting with undergraduate and graduate student course registration; auditing transcripts for students filing Intent to Graduate; coordinating the evening exam calendar; coordinating approval of course credit for courses taken at other universities. 
  • Handle undergraduate pre-advising issues, such as: completing an intake interview and an evaluation of the academic record of each student who declares the chemistry major or minor; discussing the requirements for the major and the opportunities available to students; assigning students to faculty advisors.
  • Manage academic issues, including: serving as a member of the Undergraduate Work Committee and Graduate Work Committee, serving as a liaison between these committees; informing College Office of students’ Honors and awards by deadlines; assisting faculty with disability resources needs, assisting faculty with academic integrity concerns.
  • Assess teaching support needs for undergraduate courses, work with department to assign graduate AIs to fulfill teaching needs, recruiting, hiring of graduate and undergraduate students, and supervising graduate students in roles for graders/proctors and grad faculty assistants.
  • Support information dissemination and professional development for graduate and undergraduate students, including: sharing professional development instruction/opportunities for students; revise and update department handbooks annually; advertise seminars to graduate and undergraduate students and promote participation in these events; maintain regular email newsletters for undergraduate and graduate students; serve as department representative for organizing bi-annual Midstates Undergraduate Research Symposium and other related events; coordinate and build community among undergraduate researchers; work with companies to coordinate site tours and recruiting events for students; coordinate with local universities on programming and recruitment; serve as department liaison to ACS chapter; undertake special projects to advance the student experience as directed by the chair.

Salary Range

$53,100.00 - $90,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
