Description
The Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) works under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist to perform advanced clinical duties. This role includes placing and contouring restorations, taking impressions, and providing preventive and restorative support. The EFDA combines strong technical skills with excellent patient care and teamwork to support efficient, high-quality clinical operations.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Prepare patients for treatment by explaining procedures and ensuring comfort throughout the visit.
- Take and develop dental radiographs (X-rays) in accordance with state regulations.
- Apply sealants and fluoride treatments to support cavity prevention.
- Place, carve, and contour dental restorations (fillings) as directed by the dentist.
- Take impressions of study models, crowns, and other dental appliances.
- Polish restorations and remove excess cement following restorative procedures.
- Assist the dentist during a variety of procedures, including surgical and restorative treatments.
- Sterilize, maintain, and organize dental instruments and equipment in compliance with infection control standards.
- Educate patients on oral hygiene practices and post-treatment care instructions.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Strong knowledge of dental terminology, instruments, and clinical procedures.
- Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for detailed dental work.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills for effective patient interaction.
- High attention to detail and strict adherence to infection control and safety protocols.
- Experience with dental software and electronic health records (EHR) is a plus.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by management
Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
- Completion of a state-approved Expanded Function Dental Auxiliary (EFDA) program.
- Active EFDA certification or license (requirements vary by state)
- Current CPR/BLS certification.
- Radiography/X-ray certification, if required by state regulations.
- Previous experience as a Dental Assistant (DA) is often required.
- Experience with restorative and preventive dental procedures preferred.
