Job Description Summary

Controls engineering associated with manufacturing, industrial automation, and equipment support. Impacts site-wide operations and is responsible for technical strategy, planning, and execution across multiple projects and value streams within the controls discipline. Operates with a high level of autonomy and is expected to lead complex initiatives, define technical direction, and influence cross-functional decisions.
The role requires expert-level judgment in controls and automation, with responsibility for setting standards, resolving the most complex technical issues, and mentoring other engineers. Decisions and recommendations have a significant impact on equipment safety, reliability, productivity, and long-term technology roadmap.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Serve as a lead technical authority for controls engineering supporting manufacturing, automation, and equipment performance across the site (or multiple sites, as applicable).
  • Own and lead high-impact controls and automation projects from concept through implementation, including requirements definition, design oversight, validation, and handoff to operations.
  • Develop and drive controls and automation strategy, standards, and best practices (hardware, software, networks, safety) for the site and contribute to broader organizational standards.
  • Independently troubleshoot, commission, test, and optimize complex and integrated control systems, resolving chronic, multi-factor issues and driving systemic improvements.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction in controls, electrical systems, automation, and robotics; influence equipment selection, architecture, and technology choices.
  • Ensure that controls solutions meet safety, regulatory, cybersecurity, and internal compliance requirements; champion adherence to standards and robust engineering practices.
  • Translate business and manufacturing priorities (safety, quality, delivery, cost, risk) into control system strategies and improvement roadmaps; prioritize and justify investments in modernization, obsolescence mitigation, and automation upgrades.
  • Lead cross-functional integration of controls engineering with manufacturing, maintenance, operations, quality, process engineering, and IT/OT teams to ensure robust and sustainable solutions.
  • Exercise expert-level judgment, proposing and justifying alternative architectures, technologies, and approaches; influence changes to standards and policies as needed.
  • Act as a mentor and coach for less-experienced engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance, peer reviews, and training in controls design, troubleshooting, and best practices.

Additional Responsibilities May Include:

  • Leading design and implementation of advanced PLC, HMI, and control system architectures, including redundant systems, complex sequencing, motion control, and safety functions.
  • Leading formal electrical and controls design reviews for large or high-risk projects, ensuring conformance to safety standards, maintainability expectations, and lifecycle considerations.
  • Defining and overseeing commissioning and startup strategy for new or heavily modified automated equipment and robotic systems, including FAT/SAT, validation, and handover plans.
  • Diagnosing and resolving complex issues involving control systems, networks, sensors, drives, robotics, and system interactions; driving root cause analysis and systemic corrective actions.
  • Architecting and integrating industrial networks, drives, motion systems, robotics, and functional safety circuits in accordance with applicable standards (e.g., IEC/ISO, NFPA, OSHA).
  • Authoring and approving technical documentation, electrical drawings, control narratives, functional specifications, and standards; ensuring configuration management and version control.
  • Acting as a key technical interface with OEMs, integrators, and vendors: defining technical requirements, reviewing proposals, and ensuring delivered systems meet site standards.
  • Leading or co-leading site-wide continuous improvement and transformation initiatives related to automation performance, OEE, reliability, standardization, and digital integration.
  • Contributing to long-term automation and controls roadmap planning, including technology evaluations, obsolescence strategies, and alignment with corporate initiatives (e.g., digital, analytics).
  • Providing technical risk assessments and mitigation plans for major projects and process changes, particularly in areas of safety, cybersecurity, and production continuity.
