Bureau Chief

The role:

Monocle is looking for a experienced, French-English-speaking journalist to lead our editorial coverage from Paris as our Bureau Chief. This is one of the most senior roles in our international editorial network, offering the opportunity to shape our reporting from France and across the region, while helping define our global editorial agenda and contributing to Monocle's global metabolism.

We're looking for someone with exceptional editorial judgement, a global outlook and an established network across France’s political, business, diplomatic and cultural communities. You will be equally comfortable breaking news, developing long-form features, moderating public conversations and representing Monocle at the highest level. Your relationships will uncover stories that others can’t reach and strengthen Monocle’s presence across the region.

This is a role that combines first-rate journalism with bureau leadership. You will report across print, digital and audio, contribute to our around-the-clock digital coverage, mentor colleagues, develop our network of correspondents and ensure that the Paris bureau remains closely connected to editorial teams in London, Zürich and across our international bureaux.

You will also be an ambassador for the Monocle brand, building relationships that support both our editorial ambitions and the wider business. Whether attending diplomatic gatherings, interviewing political leaders and business executives or identifying opportunities for collaboration, you will play an important role in extending Monocle’s influence in one of Europe’s most important capitals.

What you will be doing:

• Lead Monocle’s editorial coverage from France and the wider region across print, digital and audio.
• Pitch, commission, report, write and edit original journalism that reflects Monocle’s distinctive editorial perspective.
• Contribute to breaking news coverage, publishing and editing stories for Monocle’s digital platforms.
• Develop a strong pipeline of original reporting and communicate editorial plans and priorities with colleagues across the business.
• Manage a busy travel and events schedule that may involve work at weekends and evenings as required. There will be regular reporting on domestic and international stories and attendance of industry-relevant events and meetings.
• Build, maintain and expand Monocle’s network of correspondents, contributors and trusted sources across the region.
• Cultivate relationships with leaders across politics, business, diplomacy, culture and design to generate exclusive reporting and new opportunities.
• Provide day-to-day editorial leadership and mentoring to colleagues within the bureau, fostering a collaborative and high-performing team culture.
• Work closely with editorial teams in London, Zürich and other international bureaux to deliver co-ordinated global coverage.
• Represent Monocle at industry events, conferences and commercial engagements, acting as a senior ambassador for the brand.
• Support the effective running of the Paris bureau, including onboarding colleagues and maintaining strong communication across teams.

We're looking for someone who...

• Has fluency in both French and English.
• Has at least 10 years’ experience in print and digital journalism, reporting for an international audience.
• Has an established and influential network across France’s political, business, diplomatic, cultural and design communities.
• Is an outstanding reporter, writer and editor, with excellent editorial judgement and news instincts.
• Has experience leading or mentoring journalists and is comfortable managing editorial priorities.
• Is keen to travel, meet people, network, get out in the world and forge connections. The role will involve regular domestic and international reporting trips and rely heavily on initiative and judgement to manage a busy calendar of commitments.
• Is confident working across print, digital and audio, including publishing through a CMS.
• Is an exceptional relationship builder who represents a brand with credibility, professionalism and authority.
• Is proactive, collaborative and highly organised, while comfortable working independently.
• Has a deep interest in international affairs and the curiosity to identify stories before they become obvious.
• Is excited by the opportunity to shape one of Monocle’s flagship bureaux and contribute to our editorial and commercial ambitions.

This role is based in our Paris bureau but will involve regular travel and some out-of-hours requests. Please note that applicants will ideally have the right to live and work in France.
