Lifeguard - Full-Time

This is a full-time, union position with benefits and time off, upon meeting eligibility requirements.  Employees start out at pay range Level 1 and progress through six pay range levels.

Position Summary:

Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes participant safety and engagement in accordance with City policies and procedures. Takes life-saving action when needed.  

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Responsible for the health, safety and rescue of all patrons in and around the pool at all times of operation. 
• Consistently promote a positive, professional image at all times and provides consistent high-quality customer service. Interacts with users to encourage maximum proper use of all facilities.
• Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.
• Demonstrates a comprehensive knowledge of, and complies with, the facility rules, policies and procedures, and consistently and appropriately enforces them.
• Ensures safety of patrons; enforce rules and regulations; assures readiness of equipment; follow policies and procedures.
• Instructs or assists with swim lessons/aquatic related classes.
• Takes lifesaving action(s) when needed;
• Oversees physical care of pool facility, locker rooms, and shower area. Maintains a safe pool environment including keeping the pool, deck and surrounding areas secure and clean and free of hazards; maintains proper conduct of public in all areas of pool facility and interacts with users to encourage proper use of all facilities;
• Assists with the management of the Municipal Swimming Pool(s) in the absence of supervision.
• Tests water and adjusts chemical feeders.
• Assists in planning, supervising, administering and training programs for pool personnel.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• Must be able to swim and supervise swimmers. 
• Ability to work in a swimming pool environment, including but not limited to, being able to work around pool chemicals.  
• Ability to remain calm and work in emergency situations.
• Ability to be interact and be courteous to fellow employees and pool patrons of diverse backgrounds.
• Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instruction, general business periodicals, professional journals and technical procedures, or governmental regulations. 
• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. 
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
• Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to recognize potentially unsafe conditions and behaviors and correct them in a positive and appropriate manner.
• Must attend required trainings.
• Regular in-person attendance is required. 
• Must be eligible to work in the United States.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:Must possess and maintain current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certificate, First Aid and CPR/PR certification. Desired Certifications include Water Safety Instructor, American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee frequently works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation, and vibration. The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions during the summer months. The employee is frequently required to sit including in an elevated chair or on recreation equipment that is up to 20’ off the ground.  The employee must be able to swim and work in a pool. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and taste and smell. The employee must be able to maintain stable balance. The employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
 
Sufficient hearing ability, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to discern verbal instructions and emergency signals and to communicate with other employees and the general public. Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
