About Heidelberg Materials

Heidelberg Materials is one of the world’s largest suppliers of building materials, providing cement, aggregates, ready mixed concrete, and engineered solutions. We operate over 450 locations across North America with approximately 9,000 employees. Our Cadomin Quarry is a critical limestone source currently transitioning into an underground mining operation.

We are developing a new underground room-and-pillar limestone mine in Cadomin, Alberta and are seeking an experienced Senior Underground Mining Engineer to play a key role in both the mine's start-up and long-term operation.

Position Summary

The Underground Mining Engineer will support the development, commissioning, and operation of a new underground limestone mine. During the construction and start-up phase, the role will focus on engineering planning, standards development, systems implementation, and operational readiness. Once operational, the position will be responsible for mine planning, surveying, ventilation, ground control, production optimization, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Working closely with site leadership, operations teams, and corporate mining engineering staff, this role will help establish safe, efficient, and sustainable mining practices while driving operational excellence across the operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the development, commissioning, and operation of a new underground room-and-pillar limestone mine.

  • Develop and maintain mine plans, production schedules, and engineering systems that support safe and efficient operations.

  • Conduct underground surveying and provide technical expertise in ventilation, ground control, and drilling and blasting activities.

  • Monitor production, quality, and operational performance, identifying opportunities to improve productivity, reliability, and cost efficiency.

  • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and corporate teams to implement best practices and achieve business objectives.

  • Prepare technical reports, drawings, regulatory submissions, and other engineering documentation.

  • Participate in capital projects, risk assessments, and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Ensure compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements while promoting a culture of operational excellence.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering.

  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta, or eligibility to obtain within four years.

  • Minimum 5+ years of underground mining experience, preferably in room-and-pillar mining operations.

  • Strong knowledge of underground mine planning, surveying, ventilation, ground control, and geomechanics.

  • Experience with mine planning, scheduling, and surveying software.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze operational data and implement improvement initiatives.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in large-opening room-and-pillar mining operations.

  • Experience developing engineering standards, procedures, and operational systems.

  • Familiarity with mining automation, remote operations, and digital mine planning technologies.

  • Understanding of raw material quality management and cement manufacturing requirements.

  • Experience with CAD, GIS, database management, and engineering reporting systems.

  • Provincial mining safety training.

  • Alberta Mine Manager Certificate or eligibility to obtain certification.

Work Environment

  • Primarily quarry-based with exposure to varying weather conditions, noise, and physical demands. PPE is required.

  • Includes work in underground environments as the quarry transitions to underground operations.

  • Relocation to the Cadomin/Hinton or surrounding area is required for this role. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain a regular on-site presence. Fly-In/Fly-Out arrangements are not available; however, a relocation assistance package is provided to support a smooth transition to the community.

What We Offer

  • Competitive base salary ($111,670 – $148,903) with annual incentive plan eligibility.

  • Industry-leading benefits including health, dental, and pension/RRSP.

  • Training, professional development, and career advancement opportunities within a global organization.
