Community Work-Study Program

 

The Community Work-Study Program (CWS) provides federal financial aid eligible students the opportunity to work part-time at nonprofit organizations that serve the public interest. 

 

Goals of this program include: 

 

• Developing interest in public service through employment with TAMIU and placement in local nonprofit, government, or community-based organizations. 
• Applying skills and theories gained through coursework to solve problems and explore issues outside the classroom. 
• Enhancing career competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership. 
• Articulating how experiences will shape personal, academic, and professional pursuits. 

 

Position Overview

The program intern will support the Laredo Regional Food Bank’s efforts to increase public awareness, encourage community participation, and strengthen volunteer and donor engagement. Under the supervision of the Executive Director or designated staff, the student will assist with bilingual marketing materials, social media content, community outreach, and special events. The student will help promote food bank services, food distributions, and initiatives such as Adopt-a-Family and community agriculture while gaining practical experience in nonprofit communications and public service.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

• Assist with community outreach at local meetings, school events, health fairs, and partner gatherings throughout Webb County.
• Support communication with local businesses, nonprofit organizations, schools, and civic groups to promote food drives, food distributions, and hunger relief initiatives.
• Share information about food bank services, distribution schedules, volunteer opportunities, and community programs.
• Create bilingual English and Spanish social media content, including captions, graphics, photographs, and short videos, for staff review and approval.
• Assist with maintaining a social media content calendar and monitoring audience engagement.
• Design flyers, banners, newsletters, and other printed and digital outreach materials using Canva or similar design platforms.
• Assist staff with preparing website updates, including distribution hours, event announcements, and program information.
• Draft media announcements and promotional content for review and distribution by authorized staff.
• Help promote volunteer opportunities for individuals, schools, and corporate groups.
• Assist with planning and supporting fundraising events, donor recognition campaigns, seasonal drives, and community activities.
• Gather and draft impact stories and testimonials highlighting families, volunteers, donors, and community partners, following staff guidance and consent procedures.
• Organize outreach materials, photographs, contact lists, and activity records to support program reporting.
• Collaborate with staff to ensure outreach materials are accurate, accessible, culturally responsive, and consistent with the food bank’s mission.
• Maintain professionalism and confidentiality when working with community members, volunteers, donors, and partner organizations.
• Perform other related duties as assigned in support of the food bank’s marketing and outreach efforts.

Minimum Requirements

 

• Enrolled at least half-time, 6 credit hours per semester for undergraduate and 3 credit hours per semester for graduates.
• Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduates students.
• Must have a current and complete file with the Office of Financial Aid.
• Must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA application annually.
• Must be a U.S. citizen, or permanent residence, or has an alien registration number.an eligible non-citizen.
• Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to communicate effectively in English and Spanish, both verbally and in writing.
• Familiarity with social media platforms and an interest in creating engaging digital content.
• Basic experience using Canva or similar software to create flyers, graphics, and promotional materials.
• Interest in photography, video creation, storytelling, and nonprofit marketing.
• Ability to engage respectfully with people from diverse backgrounds, including community members experiencing food insecurity.
• Confidence speaking with individuals and groups about programs, services, and volunteer opportunities.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
• Ability to manage multiple assignments and meet deadlines.
• Willingness to learn email marketing tools, website content updates, and social media reporting.
• Ability to follow directions, receive feedback, and obtain staff approval before publishing or distributing content.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
• Dependability, creativity, flexibility, and strong follow-through.
• Interest in learning about Webb County’s community needs and local support services.
• Commitment to public service, hunger relief, and treating all community members with dignity and respect.

Other Requirements

• Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.
• Promptly complete all required training.
• Input hours worked daily and submit time sheet biweekly.  
• Some evening and weekend work may be required.
• Reliable transportation.
• Subject to funding and/or need.

Rate of Pay: $10.00/hour for up to 15 hours per week
