Sr. Enterprise Systems Engineer

What You'll Do

Avalara's Marketing Technology team is looking for a senior engineer to own the backbone that turns every lead into a routed, enriched record: intake, validation, enrichment, and routing services, plus the Personalization Engine that powers sales collateral. Reporting into our Marketing technology IT teams, you'll be the technical authority for our leads engineering services team. Unlike backend roles buried in one product team, you'll own architecture end to end across AWS, giving you direct influence on design reviews and runway planning, not just ticket execution.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

Most days you're building and hardening AWS serverless services (Lambda, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS/SNS) that validate, enrich, and route leads from forms, paid social, events, and list uploads into Salesforce and Marketo. You'll design and evolve data models in DynamoDB and Snowflake, tune conversion-tracking flows across Google, Floodlight, LinkedIn/Meta CAPI, and troubleshoot the Personalization Engine's webhook and draft-generation pipeline with Outreach/ALFA. Along with evaluation and integration of AI-powered capabilities into lead enrichment and personalization pipelines, partnering with the BSA and platform teams to define technical requirements, owning prompt versioning, token budgeting, and output validation. You'll also meet with Demand Gen, SDR leadership, and RevOps to translate technical trade-offs into decisions they can act on, and you'll write the Terraform, AWS infrastructure code and monitoring/alerting that keep the whole system secure and observable.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
• 8+ years engineering in MarTech/enterprise systems, including hands-on AWS serverless (Lambda, API Gateway, Step Functions, EventBridge, SQS/SNS, CloudWatch) and Terraform/IaC.
• Proven database design across DynamoDB (keys/indexes/TTL/state) and analytics models in Snowflake; strong SQL.
• Integration depth with Salesforce, Marketo, and identity/consent-aware data flows; resilient API patterns and error handling.
• Experience owning high-throughput pipelines (validation, enrichment, dedupe, reprocessing) and operational SLIs/SLOs.
• Excellent stakeholder communication; able to present trade-offs and lead technical breakdowns for non-engineering audiences.
• Conversion tracking (Google/Floodlight/Meta/LinkedIn) and attribution data propagation across web, RMS/AvaForm, and backend.
• Security-by-design in AWS (KMS, least-privilege IAM, secret rotation, privacy constraints).

AI

• Experience building or integrating AI/ML-adjacent services (LLM APIs, vector pipelines, or AI-driven enrichment/personalization tools) into production serverless architectures.

• Active use of AI coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor) as a daily engineering practice, mentoring Junior developers in these tools.
