Director of Family Services

Loudoun County, Virginia, is seeking an experienced local government leader to serve as its next Director of Family Services. This is an exceptional opportunity to lead one of Loudoun County's most impactful departments, guiding programs and services that strengthen families, protect vulnerable residents and enhance the overall well-being of one of the nation's most dynamic communities.

The Director provides strategic leadership for a comprehensive and complex human services organization responsible for mandated social services encompassing child and adult protective services, clinical services coordination, community outreach, emergency assistance, domestic violence services, family engagement services, public assistance and benefits, workforce development and other programs that improve quality of life for individuals and families throughout Loudoun County. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to enhance service delivery while fostering innovation, collaboration and operational excellence as the department and larger organization continue efforts to strengthen the department’s executive and internal operations posture.

As the department's top executive leader, the Director has overall responsibility for strategic planning, organizational leadership, fiscal stewardship and operational performance. The Director oversees the development and administration of the department's annual operating budget, ensures compliance with county, state and federal regulations and funding requirements, and works collaboratively with county leadership, community partners and other public agencies to advance the county's social services priorities.

The Director will lead an executive leadership team consisting of deputy/assistant directors responsible for delivering high-quality services across the organization.

The Director reports directly to one of the county's Deputy County Administrators and serves as a member of the County Administrator's leadership team. The Director also serves as the primary staff liaison to the Family Services Advisory Board, with members appointed by the Board of Supervisors, and the Community Policy and Management Team, the local oversight body responsible for administering funds to support a system of care per the Children's Services Act. Success in this role requires an executive who can build and maintain trusted relationships with organization leaders, elected officials, community organizations, regional partners and employees while advancing a shared vision of excellence in public service.

Master’s degree in Social Work, Public Administration, or related field and six (6) years of directly related progressively responsible work experience including two (2) years in a supervisory or management role or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicants must meet Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) requirements to include casework experience with children and families plus and experience as an administrator or supervisor of casework services.

Preferred Qualifications:
Local government experience and high-level management experience leading teams in family services, social services or other related fields.The successful candidate will undergo criminal, credit, and DMV background checks required. Valid driver’s license and good driving record required (driving records may be reviewed annually for continued qualification).
