This role is based in Toronto (Hybrid), reporting into the People and Culture team at the CBC. 

As the Workplace Health and Well-being Advisor, you will review disability case files adjudicated by our third party provider, and coordinate employee well-being initiatives across the organization. You will partner with CBC leaders, HR and IR teams to create, maintain and enhance a workplace culture of well-being in CBC newsrooms and across the Corporation.  You will proactively monitor industry trends to guide the development and adaption of relevant policies and procedures.

At CBC/Radio-Canada:

  • Short-Term Disability (STD) and Medical Accommodation claims are administered by a third-party provider.

  • Long-Term Disability (LTD) claims are handled by CBC’s insurer.

  • Workers’ Compensation (WC) claims are managed internally.

  • Support and intervention for journalists is provided by a third party EFAP group, with additional support being provided by a Peer Support network.
     

Key responsibilities:

Supporting Disability Claims

  • Liaises with the third party/insurer for all work-related questions and complex files

  • Consults and updates CBC’s Disability Management system regarding  the status of a file

  • Responds to all HR-related inquiries sent by the third party/insurer

  • Partners with managers for any absenteeism or work-related disability issues 

  • Liaises between the third party, Manager, HR/IR when challenged (eligibility refusal, suspension of benefits, etc.) 

  • Leads and supports the return to work meetings

  • Acts as a resource to  the IR and/or legal team in grievance arbitration or litigation

  • In consultation with HR/IR and Management, requests Independent Medical Examinations (IMEs) to evaluate an employee's capacity to participate in workplace meetings or investigations, perform job duties in the absence of an open disability file, or inform decisions regarding employment termination or retirement 

  • Assists management and HR/IR in determining if accommodations recommended by the third party are possible.

Well-being

  • Supports the network of well-being champions with well-being initiatives within the workplace 

  • Participates in the development of well-being training and delivery through L&D, and also delegated through training new trainers; this includes delivery of some Hazardous and Domestic safety training, and other ad hoc training. Makes recommendations to management on programs and initiatives through the lens of journalism and media environment to ensure alignment and relevancy

  • Makes recommendations for the development and delivery of CBC News internal supports, including well-being guidelines and protocols for leadership teams, team planning sessions and debriefs connected to major difficult stories; plays a leadership and coordinating role in Peer Support network 

  • Participates as a well-being leader in manager-approved industry events and groups, including industry well-being working groups, written pieces, conference presentations, and consultations with other well-being leaders working with the CBC

  • Shares relevant well-being information through various communication channels

  • Keeps all well-being resources and documentation current and relevant

  • Drives impactful well-being initiatives, from inspiring challenges to engaging activities, promoting a culture of health and vitality.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Nursing, Healthcare, or psychology degree with experience in disability management 

  • Minimum of 7 to 10 years of experience in Disability Management, Human Resources and/or Occupational Health

  • Knowledge of federal and provincial  disability legislation and Workers’ Compensation processes

  • Proven experience navigating the healthcare industry and its unique operational challenges

  • Experience working with third-party administrators and/or insurers

  • Excellent communication skills (English), written and verbal

  • Bilingualism and/or functional knowledge of French is required

  • Demonstrated experience in designing and implementing workplace well-being and disability management programs

  • Experience working in a unionized environment is required

  • Demonstrated discretion, empathy, and professionalism in handling sensitive information.

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team, while having a customer service mindset in supporting internal stakeholders 

  • Demonstrated success collaborating with third-party administrators and insurance providers.
