About the role
Key responsibilities
- Receive, identify, organize, and prepare environmental samples for organic analysis.
- Perform sample extraction and preparation using applicable EPA methods and ALS standard operating procedures.
- Accurately measure, weigh, transfer, dilute, and process samples and reagents as required.
- Operate laboratory equipment used in organic sample preparation following established procedures.
- Complete required worksheets, logbooks, labels, chain-of-custody documentation, and electronic records accurately and in a timely manner.
- Follow quality-control requirements and promptly communicate sample, equipment, documentation, or process issues to the appropriate supervisor.
- Properly handle, label, store, and dispose of samples, solvents, reagents, and laboratory waste in accordance with laboratory and safety procedures.
- Safely and thoroughly clean, wash, and maintain scientific glassware and laboratory equipment.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and orderly work area.
- Follow all applicable health, safety, environmental, and chemical hygiene requirements, including the proper use of personal protective equipment.
- Meet established production, turnaround-time, quality, and accuracy expectations.
- Work collaboratively with other laboratory departments to support sample flow and client deliverables.
- Participate in training and demonstrate competency in assigned methods and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.

- Sound judgment when identifying and escalating safety, quality, sample, or process concerns.
- The ability to work assigned shifts, including off-shift schedules, as required.
Required qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous laboratory, environmental, manufacturing, production, or sample-preparation experience is preferred but not required.
- Additional education or experience in chemistry, environmental science, laboratory science, or a related field is preferred.
- Basic ability to read and follow technical instructions, procedures, and safety information.
- Ability to work safely with laboratory chemicals and materials following training and established procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Physical demands and work environment
- Ability to stand and work for extended periods, including shifts of up to eight hours.
- Ability to frequently use hands and fingers to handle samples, containers, pipettes, glassware, laboratory equipment, and other materials.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, or move laboratory supplies and materials consistent with the requirements of the position.
- Ability to see clearly enough to read sample labels, documentation, instrument displays, and written procedures.
- Ability to hear and communicate effectively with coworkers and supervisors.
- Ability to work in a laboratory environment where exposure to chemicals, odors, solvents, glassware, and other laboratory hazards may occur.
- Ability to wear required personal protective equipment, which may include gloves, safety glasses, laboratory coats, and respiratory protection where applicable.
