THE OPPORTUNITY

The Graduate Assistant, Access Services supports the daily operation of the Horn Library Information Desk by providing direct supervision and guidance to Student Information Assistants during assigned shifts. Working closely with the Supervisor, Access Services, this position helps ensure excellent customer service, consistent adherence to library policies and procedures, and smooth execution of day-to-day circulation and service desk operations.

The Graduate Assistant serves as the primary point of contact for student employees on assigned shifts, monitoring performance, providing coaching and direction, documenting concerns, and communicating issues to the Supervisor, Access Services. The position also assists with library projects that support access to library resources such as shelf reading and inventory.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

  • Provide day-to-day supervision and support for Student Information Assistants working at the Information Desk.
  • Monitor student employee performance, productivity, and adherence to established desk procedures.
  • Answer questions, provide guidance, and assist students in resolving operational and patron service issues.
  • Reinforce library policies, customer service expectations, and workplace standards.
  • Document performance concerns, attendance issues, and exceptional accomplishments, reporting them to the Supervisor, Access Services.
  • Assist with training and onboarding of new Student Information Assistants.
  • Serve as a role model for professional behavior, accountability, and customer service excellence
  • Ensure student employees provide courteous and professional assistance to patrons and direct users to appropriate library or campus resources
  • Support circulation operations, including patron registration, check-in/check-out, renewals, holds, and related service functions
  • Communicate and enforce library policies and procedures
  • Assist with basic troubleshooting of public service equipment, printers, and technology issues, escalating concerns as appropriate.
  • Support and participate in library projects, special initiatives, and operational improvements as assigned.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as required.

  • Excellent customer service skills and interpersonal skills
  • Must be highly dependable and communicative.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Comfort learning and using library and campus technology systems
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced service environment

  • Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook/Calendar) and Canvas.

HOW AND WHERE YOU WILL WORK

This is an in-person position that will work 10-20 hours per week at Horn Library

ADDITIONAL SKILLS YOU MAY HAVE

  • Previous experience working in a library, academic support center, student services office, or other customer service environment.
  • Experience training, supervising, or mentoring others.
